It was a super-special night of Buzzwordz trivia at the Urban Sombrero Saturday night and I was so happy to be back after being ridiculously sick and missing the show last week.  Luckily for the regulars our fearless leader, Tobin Hays, stepped in that night to host in my absence.  He must have really enjoyed himself because he was back last night for hot-cha-cha trivia at Urban Sombrero.  What made this a super-special night was two important changes:  a CASH MONEY prize for 1st place and a special set of trivia questions just for the Urbrero.  Woot!

And what a night!  We started strong with regulars Delerium, Guinness is Best, Vandelay Industries, and Chase and Mike cordially duking it out with special guest stars Jan and Dean, London Calling, …And the Winner Is, and MSP.  Almost everyone struggled with Round I’s challenging questions, with the notable exception of Round I winners Guinness is Best, who managed a near-perfect round score.

Round II found the other teams, Delerium in particular, catching up to the Guinness juggernaut, eventually tying for the win.  Although their tie-breaker answers were very close, Guinness is Best took Round II and some delicious shots, shots, shots.

Once again in Round III Guinness is Best and Delerium raced through the questions, leaving the other teams in the dust.  In the end there could be only one winner, however, and tonight it was Guinness is Best, with an astounding 46 points for the game (including email and bonus points).  Congratulations!

Stay tuned for next week to see if any team, anywhere can mount a challenge to the unstoppable Guinness is Best!

Wow, what a fantastic crowd we had at the Urban Sombrero Saturday night!

All the usual suspects…I mean regulars, were there: Chase & Mike, Delerium, and Do Me Dirty! and they were joined by Spandau Line Dance, Gearheart, the Babettes, and the Jaybirds (Vandelay Industries incognito) for a rollicking good triva night.

Round I was close throughout, a real slugfest.  Delerium, with the help of a couple of lovely assistants, squeaked out the victory.

Round II was a hard-won victory for the Babettes, even with Gearheart taking their tools and heading home early on and Spandau Line Dance , being  British, having a hard time with the Americana questions.  Once again the teams fought it out within a point or two of each other to the bitter end and Babette‘s victory surprised them most of all.

Round III took a toll on the hostess’ froggy voice, but we all sallied forth and watched as Delerium proceeded to wipe the floor with the other teams’ tears.  A huge round for Delerium, and the game win with an impressive 47 points.

Congrats to all teams and thanks for not choosing Buzzwords trivia at the Urban Sombrero for what you’re giving up for Lent!  See you next Saturday!

Elaine, you are a genius.

No, Elaine was not at the Urban Sombrero for Saturday night trivia, but Vandelay Industries sure was, along with Guinnes is Best, Team I Love Rowley/Do Me Dirty, Spandau Line Dance, Team Funk!, Chase and Mike, and Monster.

Round one started with your humble host reading Question 1…from last week.   Whoopsie!  Luckily, the teams were tucking into fabulous Mexican food and cold beers and were not too fed up with me.  Got that straightened out and the show went on.   Blooper #2 came at the end of Round 1, when I incorrectly added the round scores.  Yeah, I know — batting .1000, Alex. Before they kindly pointed out the error of my ways, Guinnes is Best was in a tie with Team I Love Rowley, which Rowley won by a scootch.  Both times were rewarded with free shots for their winning ways and I went to recollect my brains.

Round 2 went much more smoothly, and two new teams joined in: Monster and Team Funk who swept in late in the round with a flurry of great answers.  Nothing could sway the juggernaut of Guiness is Best and the ladies took Round 2 without incident.

Round 3 found a couple of team member boogying to other teams, Monster joined Team I Love Rowley and changed their name to Do Me Dirty.  The name change did not improve their ability to recall salad ingredients, and the challenge to Guinness is Best‘s dominance was left to Spandau Line Dance andVandelay Industries.  Those teams put up a great fight but Guinness is Best won Round 3 and the game, set, match.  Congratulations to the winners and I can’t wait to see all the players (and hopefully new faces) at the fabulous Urban Sombrero next S-A-T-U-
R, D-A-Y, Night!

Listen, if you haven’t tried Mellow Mushroom’s pizza yet you are severely missing out, friend.  And if you haven’t been to Mellow Mushroom to eat pizza, drink beer and play trivia, then you are obviously just trapped under heavy furniture.  Try the Thai Dye pizza, it is covered in awesome sauce.

The lovely and talented Lauren was stuck in that East Coast blizzard, doing her best to get back to sunny Denver, so I, yours truly, filled in for her as winsome trivia host at Mellow Mushroom Denver.  I had a great time spending Wednesday night with all you fabulous trivia folks, thanks!

Round 1 found The Friendos, Sway, Sauce, JAVL, Operation Kapow, Pig Soooie, The Goods, Shenanigans, The Oletti’s, Arbs, Antero, PAAS, and US all battling it out for kamikaze shots and bragging rights.  The little golf pencils flew and the designated slip-runners zipped back-and-forth at a steady rate. Although all the teams did well in Round 1, none could touch the brainpower of The Friendos, who were a little surprised by their big win, I think.

Lost a couple of teams in Round 2 when their checks came and gained a few: Coach, Christopherson, Loc-N-Load, Team Pink, I’m Hungry and Snerp & Derp joined in the high-scoring round that ended in a tie between Operation Kapow and The Oletti’s, with Operation Kapow taking the win and the shots.

The addition of teams Bolex and O’Neil made for an intesely close race for Round 3, but the guys of Operation Kapow (who really are the Other Team in disguise) could not be stopped.

Operation Kapow took first place in the game, with Friendos in second — by one measly point.

I brought my camera but forgot to put a card in it.  D’oh!  Sorry no pictures for this week but trust me; they are some good-looking teams at Mellow Mushroom!

Wow!  Mellow Mushroom at Streets of Southglenn was packed to the rafters for Wednesday’s Christmas-flavored Trivia night — I even had to give up my chair!  Happy to do so and happy to have so many people playing Buzzwordz trivia.

13 teams joined in for Round 1 and competition was fierce between Merry Mistletoe, Uncle Winston, Black Eyes, Team Extreme, Puppy Breat, Christie, The Glove That Fit O.J., Okillydoo, Cult of Tebow, Something Stupid, Men’s Club, Black Santas, and Bloody Pickles, despite some severely annoying sound difficulties faced by the increasingly frustrated hostess. Ahem.  Thanks for bearing with me, teams!  Round 1 ended in a three-way tie between Merry Mistletoe, Puppy Breath, and Men’s Club.  Puppy Breath won that tie and a round of free shots for their team.

Lego Dudes, Team Bill and Team Carpinelli joined in Round 2 and although the sound issues did not improve much, we got through it together and the round ended with another tie, between Bloody Pickles and Men’s Club.  It was super close, but Men’s Club won this round and those free beverages.

As teams finished their delicious pizzas and the kids’ bedtimes approached we lost a few teams to the late hour and gained one thanks to the late hour. Team Matt brought the heat to a blistering Round 3, coming in a close 2nd place for the round and 3rd place (and a $10 gift card for Mellow Mushroom) for the game.  Our second place winner of a $15 gift card was Team Bill, and in a massive win for Round 3, the game, and a $25 gift card was Men’s Club.  And they did it all with pure brain power, folks, not a smartphone among them, they’d like you to know.  Congratulations!

Big Winners Team Men's Club

3rd Place Winner Team Matt with the lovely Team Carpinelli

Tuesday night Trivia action at Hayter’s & Co. in lovely LoDo was a slugfest between home team Team Hayter’s and regulars/challengers Team X, with a Moneypit thrown in to make things interesting.

Team X easily dominated Round 1, winning the dazzling duo some tasty beverage, which must have befuddled the team a little bit, since they went on to lose to the home team in Round 2. Distracted by concerns outside live pub trivia, Team Moneypit finished third in Round 2 and opted out of Round 3.  Naturally, Round 3 ended in a tie, Team X won the tiebreaker question and the game.  Despite their dour expressions in the team photo, they are friendly and happy — and rather smart.  Congrats!

A little drizzle of snow does not stop anyone in Centennial from getting their pizza and trivia on, just so’s you know.

My debut at Mellow Mushroom in Centennial was loads of fun and having 14 teams playing made for a very competitive little trivia game!  We had: Something Stupid, Lancers, Clan Catel, Rabid Goldfish, Go Blackhawks!, Eli & the Schoolgirls, French Ticklers, Slammers, Ducks, Egg, Pattycake, Underage, J-Dog and Trapstars all matching wits for a chance at free beer and some coveted Mellow Mushroom gift cards.

Round 1 was easily taken by the ladies of Something Stupid who consistently were the first to turn in their (usually 100% correct) answer. Not to be trifled with were Clan Catel, Rabid Goldfish, Eli & the Schoolgirls, and French Ticklers, who all tied for runner-up status for those free beers (which turned out to be free something else, because Something Stupid don’t like beer, thank you very much!)

Something Stupid tried to take Round 2 as well, but upstarts Team Egg brought their combined brainpower to the task and won the tiebreaker, affording them the opportunity to drink free beverages!

As teams finished their delicious dinners and the evening went on, we lost a few teams to bedtime.  Competition raged, however, and Lancers, Something Stupid, Egg and Rabid Goldfish battled it out in Round 3.  Taking first place were the nice gentlemen of Lancers, with Something Stupid a close second and Egg a close third — all within one point of one another.  Whew!

A good time was had by all and I, for one, am very much looking forward to next Wednesday (not Tuesday as I ditzily kept saying — thanks to those kind people who gently reminded me it was, in fact, Wednesday) for Buzzwordz trivia at Mellow Mushroom Centennial!

Another lovely, unseasonably warm December night brought the heat to trivia competition at Hayter’s & Co. in LoDo, with home team Hayters going toe-to-toe with Hayters Sister in a sibling rivalry-fueled grudge match.  Before that happened, however, Team 4 v. 1 and table sharing opponents BD/DB and Bottoms Up! fought it out for Round 1 dominance with BD/DB beating out 4 v. 1 in the tiebreaker for the winning round o’ shots.

Round 2 lit the match between Hayters and Hayters Sister but Team X jumped into the game and quickly dominated the room with his dazzling one-man show of mental prowess and handily won himself a cool shot.

The Buzz Beater question in Round 3 helped amp up the scorage and the round was narrowly won by BD/DB, who beat tied-up siblings Hayters and Hatyers Sister by just one point.  Those two teams met in the final tiebreaker (for bragging rights at the holiday dinner table) and Hayters took his Sister by the thinnest of victories.

Our game winner, by one measly point, was the home team: Hayters.  Congrats!

A lovely night in LoDo brought out more trivia players to Hayter’s & Co. who smartly took advantage of the delicious food and drink specials while I worked out a few technical difficulties.  Nothing stops Buzzwordz trivia, though, so we sallied forth and to and fro.

Round One proved to be a challenge for the teams and it was close race between The Other Team, Denim Chicken, Team Brown and the hometeam, Team Hayter’s.  In the end, Denim Chicken clucked their way to free Kamikaze shots.

Two more teams, Whatchoo Talkin’ Bout, Willis and Jager Chance joined in for Round Two and battled it out in another close round that ended with Denim Chicken pecking out the win and more shots.

The third round brought out the know-it-alls and all the teams scored big, though none could top the poultry in motion of Denim Chicken, winners of all three rounds and the game. Congrats!

We’ll be back in action (with a new video cord!) next Tuesday night at Hayter’s & Co. in LoDo — hope to see you there!

Those of us who DID NOT score tickets to see Roger Waters/Pink Floyd managed to still have a good time Tuesday night by stretching our brains with Buzzwordz trivia at Hayter’s.

Team Hayter returned to single-handedly challenge the intelligence cluster of Team Spartans and the Bitch Hunter think tank, taking it to the hoop on every sports-related question.

Team Worm Weasels tried to make it happen in Rounds I and II but bowed out at the Buzz Beater, promising to return next week when their brains recovered.  Hayter and Spartans were neck-and-neck through Round I but couldn’t touch Bitch Hunter, who scored a perfect round and delicious, delicious alcohol.

Round II was a challenge for all the teams; I guess all we know about turkeys is that they taste good.  Still Hayter and Spartans slugged it out for 2nd place as once again Bitch Hunter regulated. Shots! Shots! Shots!

Spartans suited up for Round III, determined to wrest victory from the clutches of Bitch Hunter.  They were strong, they were smart, they put distance between themselves and Hayter, and rallied.  Bitch Hunter, however, would not be denied.

Winning every Round, the Game and [probably] a nice hangover was Bitch Hunter, with Team Spartans picking up the 2nd place prize.  Great game, everyone – hope to see you next week for the rematch!
