Pendulum Swings Back at City Pub April 30, 2009

For those of you that have never been to City Pub, there is a partition basically seperating the drinking side from the dining side. It’s a great set-up that let’s the drinkers drink and play pool while other patrons can enjoy some of Denver’s best bar food, including City Pub’s award winning hamburgers. Typically I don’t bother people while they’re eating. Last night we were able to tap into the food side of the bar with great results!

Sparklemotion pulled it out by one point in the end edging previous week’s champions Sotally Tober. I never like to decide the difference in a game, but in a highly controversial move, it was determined that Cialis is NOT chemically identical to viagra,(Not that there has been any kind of need in these products by the host). Sotally Tober, ever the classy team took their second place prize with dignity and promised revenge next week. MS started playing trivia as a lark between salad and the main course, but ended up winning Round 1 and taking 3rd over all. 420.com played a valiant game, doing very well on science questions in particular. Drivers missed Round 1 but might prove to be a team to be reckoned with. J&K got hooked while eating dinner. Glockenspielers started off slow, but got more into it as the night went on. Jayhawks, despite their unfortunate name did a great job, but had to get back home. Check us out next time!

Well, here we are again. Another night of gut busting trivia with lots of willing participants. Those teams never new what hit them.

Team Ralphie

Team Ralphie

Team Ralphie did really well for the night. In fact, you could say that they “Buffoloed” their way through the rounds. Great Job on knowledge.

Team The Johnsters

Team The Johnsters

Well, what can I say about these guys except that they rock with trivia. Repeat winners and repeat beer drinkers too from the looks of it. They were the overall winners. Didnt I cut them off earlier?

Team From Out of Town

Team From Out of Town

These lovely couple did pretty good in the second round and made life tough for everyone around them.

Team T and D

Team T and D

These ladies did really good for the night, and of course by good, I mean Googling the answers. Or using a lifeline. I was giving them a bunch grief but they were good sports..

Team 3 1/2 Witches

Team 3 1/2 Witches

They told me right away that it was a rough work day for everyone so thats the reason for coming out to have some fun. And fun they did! I think I gave them a point in round two because they were having such a bad day. Awww, hope it got better during the week.

K, now I have no idea why the pics are now over here instead of the middle. Hmmm, wonder if this team has anything to do with it. Although I do know that they did really well and they are also repeat performers.

Team Bohemiens

Team Bohemiens

These two came in to play cause somebody didnt want to study. So beers and wine and trivia soothed their tortured soul. Always a repeat performer and two great people too.

Team Falcon

Team Falcon

Last but not least, I want to say thanks to the great staff at Falcon for letting be a part of their Tuesday nights. Holly pours a stiffy..

Ill see everyone next week. And of course, I always get the first beer on Wednesday.

I did not go to kindergarten apparently… April 29, 2009

turn out 16 is smaller than 19… Who knew?

Ok, I lost my scoresheet so I’m just writing on the fly here.  Let me guess who won first?

Dave you are totally the backbone of Baked Mac. Joey, you need to stop being a pain in the butt.

Now- who won second?  Ah yes- MJF Fan Club!  So for some reason my computer is saying that the pic I am trying to download is already in my computer which is totally not true.  Fortunately the picture was not very flattering (well, really just of you, Clint- and you know why) But yes!  Second! And…. I swear that I am not giving Baked Mac extra points.
Oh this is adorable team that won third.  Although this is not actually a photo of you- you know what your team name is and you know what this means.  I will not put it in print however to protect the innocent.

Blonde Bombers! I am glad to see you again, and thanks for bringing the brains! Not that you guys are not smart or anything, I mean you do go to Mines and stuff....

This week was a pretty exciting week and some cleavage, I guess.  But really, I wasn’t showing hardly any cleavage.  I guess they just looked huge!  We had mostly regulars, but a couple of new teams as well.

4-28-09-002The winner this week was Secret Life of Bea Arthur.  They won the game in the tie breaker.  They were also able to score a pitcher of beer this game.  They were a combination of a few teams, but lasted most of the game.

4-28-09-001Second place went to Can You Get Swine Flu from Swallowing?  They won a pitcher in the second round and then fought for the prize.

his wife is hiding, but she played too

Us

was a team from Old Chicago that has decided that they like the drink specials of  Charlie’s. They hadn’t won a prize in the past, but they were able to score a pitcher and some drink cards.

Other teams that we had playing:

4-28-09Alleycat, I don’t know what happened to you, but I’m sorry to inform you that you didn’t win this week.  They are usually in the running somewhere, but didn’t get on the score board this week.

yes- he was stripping in the background!

Oh, you Phyllis!  You always recruit people to play with you.  He went though four team members before someone committed to him.  He wasn’t able to score any freebies from me tonight.

4-28-09-008Team Asshole Minus Moe (I guess Moe is still an asshole eventhough she wasn’t there).  They lost some of their players, but they stuck with the game.
4-28-09-006Even when he doesn’t win, Erebus keeps coming back for more.
Oh, that’s how we do it at Charlies!!  Tuaca Baby played just the third round but fared pretty well.
See you guys next week!!

Tuesdays at The Glenn with Preacher (The Last Score) April 28, 2009

Hi everyone and welcome to my final post as your faithful and fantastic host of Buzzwordz Trivia. Tonight we’re doing a live blog from The Glenn Bar and Grill in Northglenn, with events coming to you as they happen and then posted up as soon as the game is over.  So sit back, relax, and enjoy this farewell tour of me, Preacher, the greatest person to ever live!

Tonight at the Glenn we have six teams shakin their money makers, and by “money makers” I mean “brains”, and by “shakin” I mean “thinking with”, for the prizes each and every round.  Round 1 started well enough with an opening flurry from all teams answering the first question correctly on the Geneva Convention, but by the Biggie/Tupac question things were a little shaky.  I guess not everyone knows their eastcoast westcoast rapper world history, damn public schools, but 3 teams, Open Minded Skeptics, Pool Guys, and Morning Wood, had perfect scores going into the midround danceoff.  OK, there is no midround dance off, but that would be pretty tight right?  Anyway, with a completely unsruprising round of correct answers on Miller High Life and Survivor winners, we entered into the home stretch of the first round and though many teams were all within few points of each other, one team led the pack, but a quick curveball from me giving an extra point for naming BOTH of Emmet L. Brown’s dogs from Back to the Future, put us into a 3-way … I mean a 3-way TIE after the final question.  With a spot on answer for the year Miller High Life was first brewed, Open Minded Skeptics are your round one winners!  Believe it!

We’re onto round 2 and team Help has changed their name to team 15$ to put out that positivity into the atmosphere.  Through the first part of the round the teams were all very consistant in their inconsistancy with the scores all over the place whether the question was the most beautiful people or classic novel heroines.  We had a couple of spectacular highpoints of the round with team 15$ buying me a Fat Tire and  Gods of Wrong Answers buying me a redheaded slut shot to say goodbye.  As always drinks are very much appreciated by your host and always welcome.  As we neared the end of the round, teams Gods of Wrong Answer and Morning Wood were a couple points ahead of the pack and picked up the tie.  Though they both had gross misunderestimations (sic) someone HAS to win, and with an answer off by a mere 144+ BILLION, team Morning Wood rose to the occasion and took the win.

Round 3, and we had a new team join us, team Stonies, and man were they hungry, and gigly, and a little baked, but that’s really not important.  Lots of points going out in the first few questions of the round with 3’s and 2’s racking up on everyone’s scoreboards.  Team Morning Wood sent me another, much appreciated, beverage and gained both my respect and affection, which was a little awkward.  After a disappointing lack of knowlege about Friends, the teams redeemed themselves with perfect scores about weed, hehe, go figure, and the round came to a climactic finish with team Morning Wood rising yet again.  They just can’t be kept down.

Thanks to all my teams, all my regulars, all my bar staff, and everyone that participates with Buzzwordz Trivia.  I’ve had a great time hosting and playing, and I’ll miss all you guys.  You guys make the job fun and it was, indeed, an amazing experience.

Peace and Chicken Grease,

Preacher

A very chill night this week at The Glenn in Northglenn with a great bar of new faces.  In round 1 a single team dominated the field blowing away the competition.  Chick and Dick had nearly a flawless round and took the prize easily, but into round 2 and they weren’t so lucky.  Lady Godiva and Spring Blizzard = Global Warming finished the second round in a tie with Smells Like Burning following closely behind.  Spring Blizzard took the round on the tie breaker despite a wild guess.  In round 3 Chick and Dick tied with Smells Like Burning, but only for second place with Spring Blizzard taking the final round outright and closing out the game.

Hope you all enjoyed it and see you next week!

Howdy folks! This week at The Glenn in Northglenn 11 teams saddled up and took the trivia reigns hoping to plant their flags in victory.  Round 1 started with all teams taking the first question.  As the round went forward the standings broke up a bit, but a number of teams still stayed close in points.  Teams Balls Deep, Cruz, Ashely Shafer BMW, and FOP all came close to a win, but barely edging out the competition, team Gods of Wrong Answers took the round.  In round 2, as always, the fervor kicked up a notch and while some teams struggled to keep alive, team FOP had a stellar performance and took the round.  On to round 3 and teams The Doors and El Solo Lobo were able to make a dent in the leads of the other teams dominating the game, but in the end, it was the all too familiar Gods of Wrong Answers taking it once again and ending the game.

See you all next week!

Neil Young - Round 3's okay by me

Well, we didn’t quite hit the record at OC Broomfield but it sure felt like it – 17 teams and no open tables anywhere.  And, OMG, did they come out to play!

Round one was hotly contested with two teams tieing with 9.5 points – Eleanor Beersby and Jiggly Titmice.  And their answers were so close that I had to break out the calculator to determine a winner!  Eleanor won it. And to top it off, we had 8 teams within 2 points of them: What’s Your Beef?, Profit, SVT, Not Quite There, Tess, McBilder, Bionic Cows, and Mustard.

We lost SVT, Brew Crew, Meth Lab Rejects, D&M, and Mustard, which allowed some people at bars and railings to sit down, and we were joined by Castration Station. When the dust settled before round 2 started, there was still only one open booth in the back. Yowzer!

McBilder won round 2 with some margin, but there was a clump of teams all gathered close to 2nd: Jiggly Titmice, Not Quite There, Yes, That, and Eleanor Beersby.  Some teams really started to make use of their style points such as Castration Station, Bionic Cows, and What’s Your Beef?

After round 2, the space opened up a little with Profit, Freuds Missing Stage, Crotch Duster, and BDay Girl leavingNeil Young came out just for round 3 and so he could satisfy his trivia jones.  We were glad to have him.

Round 3 proved to be close as well with Eleanor Beersby just edging out McBilder, and Not Quite There close behind but not quite there.

With those strong round 3 performances McBilder and Eleanor Beersby took home top points.  Too bad we didn’t have a gazillion prizes, ’cause there were so many teams oh, so close!

We’ll have to try again next week to give away prizes to those that missed it.  See you then?

Ciao for now,

– Keith

Off and running at Bender’s!!! April 26, 2009

Hello there trivia world!

You all may not know me yet, but I hope to meet you soon. I am your newest Buzzwordz host; hosting at your newest location, Bender’s in Westminster.

Let me start by saying, I’ve never been to Bender’s before, and I have been missing out! They have windows looking out onto the ice rink. What could be better than playing trivia, while watching an amateur adult hockey league live…well, probably a few things, but it was still an awesome bar, with an atmosphere to be envious of!

On to the trivia!

It started off slow in my initial run through the bar, only one team took me up on my invitation to play. Yet when I asked the first question I had a total of 8 teams turn in answers! Where they got the answer sheets I have no idea, I just know I was glad to have them.

Round 1 progressed pretty much on task. I was still trying to get a feel for this new show, new job, and new crowd, so I wasn’t quite opening myself up to the crowd yet. The teams, however, were lovin’ every minute of the game. Round 1 ended in a two way tie between “The Legion of Super Nerds: Rouge Squadron” and “What Now?” However, not being big beer drinkers the ladies of “What now?” took a dive in the tiebreaker question, allowing “Super Nerds” to win their free pitcher.

I suppose two technically qualifies as a "legion"

I suppose two technically qualifies as a "legion"

Round 2, things started to get fun. We lost a couple teams in the break, but those that remained had a BLAST. The round was pretty tight between everyone, until a question about the meaning of the initials ROI, allowed “What Now?” to pull into a three point lead, winning the coveted “Boulder Beer” Baseball Cap!

It's hard to see these lovely ladies; not because it's sunny, but because there is an ice rink behind them!

Round 3. Things got really tight here. At this point every single person in the bar was playing trivia, and we were loving it! We cracked jokes, we told stories, we even broke into a horrible karaoke of “Sweet Caroline” at one point! In the end, the “Legion of Super Nerds” pulled out the victory, winning a $25 gift certificate, and “What Now?” won 2nd, and a $10 gift certificate. “The Sinners” placed a very VERY close third only missing 1st by 2 points.

Just barely missing 2nd place...by only 1 point!

Just barely missing 2nd place...by only 1 point!

All in all, this was a great night to start at Bender’s the crowd was small, but it will build.

I mean, come on, hockey and trivia! Win-win!

Sotally Tober Shakes Off Rivals April 25, 2009

Sparklemotion was back in the house after a short team vacation. Two week champions, Sotally Tober were glad to see their old rivals. Once the game started all overtures at friendship ceased and the two teams rolled up their sleeves for a showdown. That’s not saying this was a two horse race. We had seven teams total exercising their livers and minds.

We had Unga Bungas make their trivia debut, and while they were taken with the concept and format, they had to get back to the kiddies and forfeited round 3. Teams Running Rebs’, Conjoined Octos, and Oliver Klossof did their best with what they had, but it seems like teams with 5-7 players do much better than those with 2-4. HoosierDucks ran out of steam and promising new squad, Jitterbugs took third place.

As for the $15 second place prize, Sparklemotion held on, but just barely. As mentioned, Sotally Tober took the gold, firming up their pole position in the trivia hierarchy. These guys are good and well-rounded, they’re even talking about making jerseys. What will it take to knock them off their stoop? If you think you got what it takes, join us Wednesday nights at 8:00PM for Sout
Denver’s ultimate meeting of minds. There hamburgers are also good as hell.
