Charlies – Some “Lima” beans with that Succotash? January 31, 2008

Fun trivia night on Tuesday!  With the return of the”Alley” in the Cat, Meow/Alleycat pulled off a strong 1st place victory to take home the big bar tab.  For their debut, ‘Serena’s Mom’ earned a solid 2nd place finish and were definitely the sexiest Midwestern mamas in the whole place.  Team Sugarpants came out with 3rd, and but definitely got the 1st prize for trivia spirit.  No, you can’t submit 4 answers to one question…

The most exciting part of the night came during the 3rd round tiebreak.  The Losers, who decided to just play for round drinks, pulled off a 15-point tie with Meow/Alleycat.  It all came down to the population of Peru…

Occupying an area the size of a couple Texases, (Texii?) in West Central South America and immensly biodiverse, this nation also allows legal coca leaves.  Yay.  Powder is still illegal which is fine with me!  I wonder exactly how many of Peru’s 27, 212,890 are “chewers” of this Inca passion…  Great job to the Losers who knowingly knew they would lose but pulled off free drinks for the round!

Cheers to all, feel free to check out Charlie’s Trivia on Tuesdays with me.

Code 3: 1/29/08 January 31, 2008

Well, well, well… another great Tuesday night at Code 3, this time with a Bucket of Brilliance.

Daniel, playing all by himself from the other room, had a rough go of it but kept plugging into the third round.  He didn’t hang out long enough for me to buy him a drink, but, Daniel, if you’re out there, come on back next week and your first one’s on me.

Abacus was rock solid on the People and Grab Bag questions, but, unfortunately, had problems with the rest of the categories… especially TV and Film.  (Yeah, sorry, guys… I suck at those categories too.)

Team Taco Bell played two and a half strong rounds but kept getting beaten out for the free beers.  There’s a joke in there about Taco Bell’s food, I think, but Your Favorite Host is still enjoying the aftereffects of 15 rounds with the stomach flu, so let’s just consider it made, shall we?

Paige and Calvin proved that you can be smart and gorgeous at the same time (or at least Paige was, and I’m assuming she wouldn’t hang around with some non-smart-or-gorgeous schlub even if he IS named after the best comic-strip character ever).  They stomped everybody else in the first round and finished in a tie for third.  But since there can be only one, we had a tiebreaker… and they lost to team LMB.

LMB had such a crazy evening, in fact, that they ended up tied both for third place and for the round prize with different teams in Round 3, which was a little bit of a nightmare for my poor math-addled brain.  But I think I got it all sorted out… and LMB‘s happy result was that at the end of the game, they had to drink a round of Coors Light AND a round of their favorite shots.

I hope nobody was driving.

Our second-place finishers, Three Dumb Blondes And A Brunette, actually consisted of two pretty smart blondes, a really smart guy with dark sandy colored hair, and their sports guy who shaves his head completely.  I’m not going to ask how they came up with the team name because I’m pretty sure I don’t want to know.

Winning the second round  by a LOT will often help you out if your third round is a little subpar.  And that was definitely the case with our champions, Shake n Bake, who took time off from their busy pool-playing schedule to lay the smack down on some two-point questions.  They were up far enough on the rest of the field that their Coors-Light-induced brain fog in the third round still left them enough of a cushion to seal the deal and inscribe their names on the coveted Code 3 Bucket of Brilliance.

I’ll see you all next Tuesday, but first make sure to get out to your caucusing locations for the primary of your choice.  (Unless you’re caucusing for Hillary, in which case yours has been moved to Thursday.)

Well well well…the night ended the same, but certainly didn’t start that way!  Our friends, 99 bananas, were back to challenge the Monkees but neither team took down round one!  Round one went to second-timers, Go Team!  We won’t mention the stunning fall in the standings that Go Team suffered after their free beer…because for one round, they were CHAMPIONS!

There were familiar names winning rounds 2 and 3 though.  99 bananas had a big round and took down the free beer and had the lead going into round 3 but they couldn’t hold off the hard-charging Monkees who grabbed round 3 and the win for the night!!!

Good to see everyone, I’ll be back in two weeks (as I’m out of town for some work this coming Tuesday) but fret not, Buzzwordz will be left in the able hands of one Mr. Tobin Hays for next week!  Catch y’all later kids!

Maybe last week’s nail-biting loss was all the Bastard Children of Bobby Fischer (No Heath Ledger?) needed to get back on the top of the table. They were back to their soul-crushing best Thursday night as they smoked all comers. We had a pretty strong game all in all with 8 teams representing. New team “Shave Lopez” came in 2nd in their Buzzwordz debut. The Shavers are two fake sport athletes, they visited Cap City after a successful night on the dodgeball court. Coming in third we had one man team Todd earning his drinks Thursday. Keep checking the blog true-believers, things are getting interesting at Cap City. Peace in the Middle East!

Oh Mary’s- it could be the kitchy-est spot to grab a burger in this town, but who knew how SMART these teams could be?!?  Excellent play by all our teams this week!  Make sure you stay tuned to find out more about the infamous PATIO-style trivia (as the weather heats up, of course).

The results: Team Bobo was no so dumb and jogged into 3rd, Whole Wheat with Nuts landed 2nd and Jan’s John and friends struck gold in 1st place!  Two weeks in a row; should we be nervous??

See you next week-

XOXO

Katzenjammer! People in Denver can spell REALLY WELL!! January 25, 2008

Seriously!  We were down to the LAST WORD on our list trying to eliminate the super-smarties that came out for the first-ever Buzz Bee at Blake Street Tavern!  I feel stupid for underestimating how great you guys would do.   Lesson learned… harder words to come!

It all started out at 8pm with 25 players bravely being the guinea pigs for our first night.  With the double-elimination process everyone had a second chance since there was an element of luck as to what word you got stuck with.   Matt Cohen and I, your humble judge Jen, worked the Bee together and we had a blast!!

It took several rounds but we finally came down to our top five super-smarties: Allison, Shelley, David, Josh and Paul.  Paul’s family was an entire group of spelling geniuses, but he couldn’t hang on when he was asked to spell sesquipedalian.  (Yeah, that word is ridiculous!)  Our final word of the night, to determine the winner was diphyodont and when Allison couldn’t quite get that one, we were left with Josh, genius supreme, as the winner of the first ever Buzz Bee.   Way to go Josh!  And a huge round of applause to our final five and the rest of the brave peeps who blew us away with their spelling abilities!  Thanks so much for making it a killer night!!

Here’s Shelley, who can say all of the United States in alphabetical order in less than 28 (ish) seconds!  She proved it tonight… (that was awesome!)

Our friend Paul…

David here was one of the bravest first two players!

And Allison, our second-place finisher.  We’ll see her next week with more teachers to increase the competition!

Last, but not at all the least, our winner Josh!

We’ll be back next week, Bee starts at 8pm but show up earlier to register at Blake Street Tavern.  Where else could you possibly want to BEE?

Kudos to Tobin for an excellent idea to get this going here in Denver.  Looking forward to it becoming a huge success!!  Also, to the Denver Art Museum and Tattered Cover who provided great prizes for the evening, it really completed a quality night.  You guys rock!

See y’all next week!

Jen
