We started @ 8p this week at Mary’s and WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MADE.  Last night was the first time we had over 10 teams playing @ Mary’s!!  Huge thanks to Joe for being on the ball and having everything rerady to go at 8:00 sharp.

Questions were a great this set and three teams emerged victorious.  King Prawns came in late and still took 3rd, Mustang Sally galloped into 2nd and Bobbie’s Beauties triumphed to 1st place!

Don’t forget… we start at 8p now at Mary’s.  See you next week!!

XOXO

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!  This update should’ve gone up two days ago, but with the holidays and all…

I had a great time filling in at Brix on Sunday.  When I walked in, everybody looked very intent on their dinners and drinks, but by the time trivia started, everybody in the bar was playing.

We had an incredibly tight game, with four of the six teams all separated by a single point–Team Nairobi, Team Club Eclipse, Wolff (our round-two PBR winners), and amazing latecomers J2–who showed up four questions into round two and still finished third overall for the night.

The lovely and talented Tasha and Dawn, a.k.a. P.O.B., looked discouraged after the second round–and it was a tough set of questions, no doubt–but they finished the night in second place, taking home $20 in gift certificates and the third-round PBRs.

But nobody could catch Team 1, who ran away with the first round (scoring 50% of the total points for EVERYBODY in that round) and coasted to a five-point win, earning $25 in bar cash, a round of PBRs, and your humble quizmaster’s undying admiration.

Hope to see you all again next week.

Who knew Xmas Eve would produce this big a crowd.  Thank you to EVERYONE who made it out on the holiday to support the cause!

As for results, Brown Oysters cracked into 3rd, Italiano into 2nd and King Prawns taking 1st place!

See you next Monday @ 9p!!!

XOXO

It ain’t easy filling Jen’s shoes… especially when she wears heels. But I did my best anyway, and we had a pretty smooth evening of trivia at Old Chicago.

Team X (playing by himself) racked up a solid 17 points, a great total after a rough first round. The No-Talent Ass Clown parlayed their engineering experience into 19 points.

Latecomers Big Foot got an impressive 22 points despite arriving three questions into the second round, but they were narrowly edged out for fourth place by the Abominable Knowmen, with 23.

Guys at the Table (plus one lady) smoked the first round, missing only the first-question bonus point (the name of the play Lincoln was watching when he was shot), but couldn’t maintain their momentum, losing second place in the third-round tiebreaker to hard-charging Your Mom, winners of the $15 certificate and the third-round beer. Both teams scored 36.

But the big winners of the evening, with an astounding 38 points, were the three gentlemen of Asskickin’, Inc., who walked away with a free pitcher after their 14-point round two and the $30 gift certificate at the end of the night.

Thanks for making this guest host feel welcome, guys. I’ll see you again next week, and then I promise Jen’ll be back.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before…the Monkees race out to easy wins in rounds 1 and 2, then hold on for the win while the 99 bananas grab the 3rd round.  Is this seriously what happens every week now?

I’m getting tired of typing that…so I’m challenging SOMEONE to knock off the Monkees in rounds 1 or 2 next time.  Someone, anyone…for the love of God…if these guys get any more free beer their wives might leave them.  No seriously.  Leave them.  For dumber guys that won’t spend every Tuesday night drinking free beer.  …wait, maybe they should be thankful that the beer is free and stop griping. 🙂

Anywhos, Old Chicago is closed for Christmas next Tuesday so y’all have a safe one and we’ll see you on New Years Night!

It was my first night as host and things went pretty smoothly, although we needed some more people. The Gorilla Room has a later crowd so next week we’re going to try a later start, we’re shooting for around 8:30pm. Hopefully we can get a few more teams to add some intensity to the game. But anyway, back to last night. Despite the best effort of Team Scott Baio, creating a tie in the first round, Bort’s Bombers took a steady lead in the second round that only increased in the third. Scampers and Toast rounded out the rest of the field and took third and fourth places, respectively.

We’re on the right track here. Let’s see what next week has to offer with a later start time.

Now, don’t confuse my header with me thinking I’m the next big thing in trivia.  It’s not that at all.  the truth of the matter is that we had an ACTUAL Jeopardy contestant playing trivia with us tonight!  That right folks, the kid with the buzz cut and the beard will have his episode air sometime in March of 2008. And while he couldn’t tell us much about the show he did tell us he didn’t win.  One week it’s Jeopardy, the next it’s Buzzwordz (we’re not worthy!)

Well, before we get to the beer winners, let’s take a moment to salute those teams who put points on the board (just not enough to do anything more than amuse themselves):  Team Bosco, The Natives, and Pursuit Team all didn’t break the bank but fun was had as always. A real surprise thrown down by the Assasinators(for real, you knew the Roseta Stone?!?) Santa’s Elves bailed during round three, but had the best worst answer of the night: President Lincoln was not shot watching a production of Grease!

So, we didn’t find out about the trivia master until the second round, but should have know after his team Of Nazareth missed only 1 point in round 1 (and winning beer in the process). They tied with Let’s put the X back into Christmas for the round 2 win, and after 2 tie-breaker questions that both teams got right on, we decided to give both beer! (Hooray beer!) After the scores for round #2 were totaled I thought we were on our way to a record score but the brakes were put on in round #3. Let’s put the X won round #3 by a point, but our resident minor celebrity’s team Of Nazareth took the night!

A great way to finish up 2007 at Breck.  Good year, good teams, good beer.  We’re taking next week off and pick it up again on January 2nd, 2008!!!  Stay safe and cab it!

Stellar night as usual at the ‘Shoe. We had a field of ten teams to start off the night and the competition was fierce and featured many tie breakers. Mess Hall finally got their day in the sun. After taking third place so many times they finally won the game, swapping places with the ever dominating Swashbuckling Sisters who took third. In the middle was Ramrod. Ramrod didn’t win any rounds but managed to stay consistently good. Cop a Feel kept forgetting to put their team name down but they’re still ok in my book.

As for the nonesense surrounding the final question? Here are my thoughts. The question was what’s on AOL Travel’s list, not what’s on my list. This is trivia, while guessing can be effective, you’re supposed to KNOW the answer. If you don’t know and have to guess then don’t bitch to me about something I have no control over, I cannot change facts. If you have a problem with the places AOL Travel put on their list of most dangerous tourist destinations perhaps you should e-mail their customer service. As little as they will care I can promise it’s still more than I do. This brings me to another topic: Rules. We all know the three written rules:

1. Maximum team size of six people.

2. Don’t shout out the answers.

3. No cheating.

Then of course I like to add super secret rule #4: Pick a team name, stick to it and always write it down. Well now I have a new rule to add. #5: Don’t bitch to me because I don’t care. While the five bucks you spend may entitle you to subject everyone to your bullshit at Taco Bell or Starbucks, I will not appease you. I simply don’t have to. Yelling at me like I’m your waitress at Applebee’s, in order to impress your fratboy friends, will not get you anything except laughed at.

On a more serious note, trivia will be on a one week hiatus for Xmas. But the ‘Shoe is still open. If you’re Jewish, or just need a drink after dealing your family all day, stop on in.

Ok, it’s never good to update a blog for a weekly event a week late but that’s what I’m doing. First off, lets say I was totally planning on updating this on Wednesday evening of last week, which would totally have been acceptable. That was before I popped a tire on a pothole, one that wasn’t in stock anywhere in the state, and also flooded my condo while cleaning my aquarium. All of this only a few hours before flying to Connecticut to visit my girlfriend’s family.

We just got back yesterday morning after the most horrible flight ever. It was one of those flights where the cabin of the plane was at least 564 degrees Fahrenheit. You have to understand, I don’t travel well. I’m not scared of flying but I really hate airports. You’ve got to love traveling when the fascists have elevated the Color Coded Fear Level just in time for the holidays. I kept telling the security people it didn’t feel “orange” but they insisted it was, right before “puffing” me with unknown gases. Traveling these days is just damn Orwellian.

But anyway, onto last week’s trivia. It was a good night. I’d say about average for the ‘Shoe, rocking about 6-7 teams. The Swashbuckling Sisters won back their title by a landslide.
