Ginn Mill - Rockies don’t rock, but we do April 7, 2008

It started out as a post-Rockies drunk-fest, but as the room cleared of some *ahem* vertically challenged folks, we got our trivia off with a bang.

It was the night of debate, apologies, and cursing at Jem (she truly is outrageous).  But when it was all said and done, there were no hurt feelings, the tears were dobbed away, and everyone had a good time.

I forgot to take pictures, and I’m not good at drawing a descriptive photo, so you’ll just have to trust me that there were a ton of people there, they all looked like supermodels (male and female), and every hot chick in the place was hanging all over me.

OK, back to reality.

Who Killed Spartacus had the name of the night, but were frustrated in round 2.  They still pulled in a nice score, and it’s always good to buy shots to drown sorrows.  WTF Is Wrong With Matt, minus Matt for the second half, had an evening of banging their heads against the table, which is always a good sign for a trivia writer.

The spoils went to The Tools of Love for round one, who double as both trivia players and tax advisors.  Sataharu Oh swung for the fences and missed first place by just one point!  Great showing, guys!  Yard Sale was as consistent as ever, winning round 3 and the overall game…consistency pays off.

We count down “The End Of Josh,” and we’ll see if Yard Sale can keep up the pace without their all-star.  Should be interesting.

Thank you everyone for dodging the ping-pong balls, the drunkened masses, and the great biology debate for a great night.  See you next week!

It certainly was a great night of trivia at Jackson’s on Thursday.  Despite the late start, it was fast & furious as 10 teams battled for the booze and gift certificates.

We were back after a two-week hiatus, and MAN, were we ready to roll or what?  The day before opening day had the staff looking for an early bedtime, but trivia players would have none of that!

Jenn Rules was able to take round one with a near perfect score.  Flip This made a great run at round two, winning the free pitcher (welcome back, Flip).  But the award for persistence, and the top prize, went to WTF Happened to Our Free Beer?  Now you know WTF happened to your free beer.

Pictures abound, as I am trying to pump out a week’s worth of trivia in one day.  Thank you everyone for greeting me in my triumphant return.  We’ll see you this Thursday!

We all found out that there is life after Benny this week, though I certainly had my work cut out for me.  Mad Dog let me know right off the bat that if I sucked, I would be pummeled.  Well, they didn’t actually say that, but they said it with their eyes.

So I did my very best despite the crappy reception on the TV.  I simply closed my eyes, gritted my teeth, and hoped everything would be OK.  Sure enough, when I opened them again, I was alive, and trivia has survived!

Now I know why this location has been so successful…beause it’s so cool!  Great atmosphere, incredible staff, and a patio in the back…nice spot.

Thanks, everyone, for making me feel welcome.  I hope you all had a great time.  The prizes were split between Team G.O.D., Mad Dog, and The Knickleheads, as well as a few shots and PBRs to make the night go smoothly.  Except for the knocked over equipment…repeatedly.  Shit happens.

Yes, this blog is very late.  We’re on a couple of weeks hiatus for the NCAA tournament, so I suppose I have a little time to post the pics.

The awesomeness of What the **** Is In This Shot? took first place, leaving Merkin to shake their heads in agony.  All of the details are fuzzy to me now, which I am sure they are for you as well, so I’ll just post the pictures and let you photoshop them.

With some surprise guests, and I believe Jackson’s is the Thursday night hangout for Buzzwordz hosts, we made a couple of adjustments to trivia to let the convicts run the prison.  Maybe I should have had all of the hosts take turns on the mic?  No, of course not.  That would rob me of joy I get in crushing their trivia hopes and dreams, which I cherish.

What a great crowd last night!  Our little Trivia at Jackson’s is all grownds up, and its all grownds up, and it’s all grownds up.

Who’s the big winner tonight?
I’m Getting a Serious Vibe Here

Great teams, great trivia, and a few looks of WTF?!?  The benefit of proofreading is that it gives you a chance to change your decision to have a three point Murphy Brown question, but also makes you re-think 1970’s defenseive nicknames, which would be a tragedy.

Twelve teams played, which is one of our biggest non-game-night crowds, and it was a tight game until the very end.  Yard Sale’s team showed in bits and pieces, but by they were just in time, as they won for the night by one point.  They are not simply content with winning Sunday nights, and their fear that I might break up their team clearly had them emotionally distraught.  Don’t fret, I won’t break you up…maybe…hehe.

In the battle of disgusting team names, I Drink Your Milky Pimp Shake was the photo finish winner, and did well in the game taking second place.  How do such nice people think of such disgusting names?  Me thinks they have some dark secrets that are best kept hidden.  Oh, Sabrina, here’s the album you need to get:

That’s pretty much how the three rounds sequenced.  Team Yard Sale came in with a near-perfect round one, and it looked like we were going to set some records.  But then, round 2 came along and had everyone in the house shaking their heads in frustration.  Mama Cass, Mama Cass, Mama Cass.

Oh well.  Like we always say, it’s “a free education with beer!”  Nice showing by our teams last night, including an unscheduled Buzzwordz Host corporate meeting, with almost half of our hosts showing up to have a great time on a Thursday evening!

One-eyed Wonder did a fantastic job of fighting it out until the end, all by himself.  Tim Duncan is a Terrorist disappeared for most of the third round, claiming he had a phone call from an actual woman.  Yeah, right.

One-Eyed Wonder….literally!
One-eyed Wonder - Literally!

Team Useless Knowledge came in late in round 2, but showed their trivia skillz and a runner on almost every question!  Just a tip for you next time: have the cute girl run up the answers…you get more leniency that way! (I know, I’m a cave man).
Useless Knowledge - If I scored points on energy and enthusiasm, you’re looking at our grand champions!

Merkins were back, and it’s always great to see them.  They barnstormed in for a victory in rounds two & three!  If you were there just a few minutes earlier, the title woud have been yours!

Great time, and a great crowd!  Jackson’s is always halfway between a very serious trivia competition and a goof-off party.  I love it.  Look forward to seeing you all next week!

Buzzwordz Trivia will go to Texas for the first time, this Tuesday (2/12) at the Conference Cafe in Lubbock!

Trivia night will begin at 8:00 PM.  It’s free to play, with lots of great prizes and drink specials to “kill the weak brain cells”

3216 4th St
Lubbock, TX 79415
(806) 747-7766

Buzzwordz Trivia is a live trivia night, where you express (or expand) your knowledge in various categories, like movies, TV, sports, geography, science, etc.  After each question is asked on the screens and by your host, you turn in your answers to the trivia host, and see how you fare agianst your competing teams!

If your team wins one of the three rounds, you can win free drinks or food!  If you are among the top teams for the game, you can win gift certificates or bar tabs!  There are other chances to win t-shirts, pint glasses, and free drinks, as determined by your host.

It is free to play, and is a great night out with your friends.

Conference Cafe is a great spot in Lubbock, and if they like us, they’re going to keep us!  Tobin will be your host for the inaugural event, as he heads back to his alma mater to spread the good word of Buzzwordz Trivia.

Scruffy’s - Taking It Up the Schnozberry December 6, 2007

Well, the Schnozzberries took it up the Schnozberry, as they struggled with an abysmal round 2.  This simply confirms my suspicion that Whitney is giving all of you guys the answers.

With the Schnozzez left to cry in their (free) beer, our other teams duked it out to the very last question.

Alpacas With a Twist and Due to the Writer’s Strike, I Can’t Get a Clever Name tied for second place for the night.  Who knew that there could be a three point question about pencils?  Writer’s Strike out-tie-breakered (I just made up a word) the Alpacas to take second, while the Long One in the Wrong One were like the toroise to the hare as their consistency, and a really strong third round, took first place.

It was a very strange night, as our regular powerhouses seem to be on a self-imposed time-out.  Oh well, that just leaves more free beer for us!

Thank you to Craig the bartender for chipping in and giving away movie tickets as another bonus!  Even though we couldn’t get Andrew to hop on the mic for a round, Craig was willing to throw Andrew into the fire anway with the “guess Andrew’s age” question.  Embarassment is a beautiful thing.

As in, Holy Crap there are a ton of people playing!  Ummmm…..no less than 28 teams tonight.  Some might say they were there for the Cowboys/Packers game tonight, but I would call them a LIAR!

I managed to work around the game with only pissing off one group out of a packed house.  I felt a little badly about angering even a single table, so here were the stages of guilt I felt:

1. “Oh, I’m sorry.”
2. “You’re wearing a Packers jersey.  I am not sorry.”
3. ”Wait, you’re kind of cute.  I am sorry.”
4. “You’re drinking white zinfandel.  I AM NOT SORRY.”

But everyone else had a great time in a competitive game.

Team Rob and DS tied for round one, with Rob taking the tie-breaker.

It then got a little nutty with a four-way tie for the second round.  Pantalones, Goldfish Don’t Bounce (awesome name), 2Hot 4Handle, and Oopsie Poopsie, I Touched My Butthole duked it out for the tie, and Oopsie, Poopsie took the booze.  And apparantly, working at Outback does not make one a steak expert, it makes you a Bloomin’ Onion expert.
Ahhhhhh, health food.

Round three was won by 2Hot 4Handle, but I think they took off without their free beer!  bummer.

The game came down to a tie-breaker between The Larks and Team Rob, which was a close one, but The Larks were just slighlty more Cameron Diazish, taking home the gift certificate, and the admiration of all.  Oh, and the Cowboys won…WOOOHOOO!

We’ll see you all next week!

Scruffy Murphy’s - You Stay Out of My Mom! November 29, 2007

While most of our teams were back from holiday hangovers, we still had some of our heavy hitters missing.  But what does that do?  It leaves room for new heavy hitters!

It was a fun night of trivia, and just about everyone won something at some point (or got free booze to douse their sorrows.  Hey! That’s just as good as winning!)

Turd Ferguson gave up in the third round, after trying to corral their dogs all night.  Two people, two dogs, one Snug?  Back Up in That Ass With the Resurrection fought hard all by his lonesome, but in the end, you really do need to watch ESPN once a month just to keep up!  And yes, we are going to have more current event questions in the future, so it’s always good to check up here and here pretty often to stay up on the latest.  The only problem with regular checks on these is that you have to endure the occasional frightening photo like this:

What? Why would you think I ate your children?

Anyway.

Strawberry Shortcake and My Girlfriend Tagged Me Out at Shortstop were just one point, ONE POINT, out of the running for the gift certificates in a very tight game.

Swiss Wolf was like the little train that could, plugging away to get the third place nod.

Then we had the name of the night, and the troublemakers of the night, Fist is Also a Verb.  While my mother is a very talented woman, and yes, she is lovely as well, she has relatively little to do with the Big 10/ACC Challenge.  Or does she?  Nice job on second place.  Mom would be proud.

But the night belonged to the Psychodelic Elvis’? Elvis’s? Elvi? They at least tied for every round, so they had significant brain lubricant to take a roaring lead in round 3, where I wasn’t sure if they were going to miss a question for a while!

Another good showing, bu i have a feeling that it is going to get uber-competitive once our absent veterans find out that the Bucket of Brilliance has been taken over by newbies.

Thanks again everyone for coming out, and we’ll see you all next week!  I gotta go.  My Mom is yelling at me to do something productive.

Boy, that was a strange night.

Thanks to all of you for waiting out the technical problems.  With the late start, we had some good teams to fight it out.  Considering trivia players were the only ones in the entire bar, it made for a very quiet night.

But we still had some fun.

Jason wasn’t feeling the funny name vibe, but he and Rockies Win! stuck it out as individuals.  It was kind of a rough first couple of rounds for individuals…so get your friends out with you!

In third place were our good friends and dead-on with their name: What Idiot Chooses the Music?  Britney Beers eeked out second place by one point.

But the champs, winning all three rounds, were our corner-booth regulars, Delorean the Valedictorian!  Fantastic job with a great score, and 30 bucks in gift certificates for their efforts.

Thanks everyone for coming out.  Let’s see if we can get a bigger crowd next week, and I’ll try to do a better job at being funny.  Just kidding…I don’t know if that’s possible.

Well, one could argue that the 3-pt Chicago Cubs question was the determining factor between ranking team…. I guess it pays to know a thing or two about the greatest team in baseball (or, at least, your host’s favorite team in ALL SPORTS of ALL TIME!).

Job well done by all who played; truly not a bad team in the house!  For our Top 3 tonight, we fun Heifers on the Half-shell, our winners from last week, dropping two spots to 3rd place…. still not a bad finish!  The “staff” team, Emily’s Birthday, Y’all, nabbed 2nd but didn’t quite have enough to trump The Alchemist(s), who dominated the entire game.   A big HAPPY BIRTHDAY Emily, glad you spent it with Buzzwordz!

Don’t miss all the excitement of next week’s game.  Mention you read my blog and I will by you a beer on next Weds.

Until then…

XOXO

No one said trivia is easy, but this was ridiculous!

When I first saw the trivia questions, I honestly thought this was going to be one of our highest scoring games ever.  I was covinced that I would be walking out with record scores.

BZZZT!  Wrong!

This turned into the trivia equivalent of Mike Tyson facing off against Hal Sparks…with no gloves.

But our teams took it in stride as an anomoly, and stuck out the carnage to the end.  Pat McGroin hung in by the tips of their fingernails to take third prize.  Face Plant, aptly named for the brutality of round one, managed a second place victory.

But fighting through it all for a resounding victory was I’ll Be at Shotgun Willie’s Across from Breast Park.

Thanks again, everyone, for making it out last night.  We’ll see you next week, and we’ll see if we can keep you from pounding your head on the bar.

Three rounds with three different winners, and our usual juggernauts were left shaking their heads in disbelief.

Tubesock and Doom Theatre are normally the dominating forces at the Scruff.  I think I saw a few tears as they walked away out of the running.  Don’t sweat it, fellas.  I don’t think any less of you.  Now, if you do it again next week…I keed, I keed.

In my modeling debut for the Westword, we had a great night of trivia, and the usual packed house!  The Cookie Monsters thought they were going to fall victim to the juggernaut curse, but they had a massive round three.  That was enough to work their way into third.  I would have said “sneak,” but there was not a sneaking into the cash…it was a pummeling.

Brain Fart won the second round, and held on for dear life in round three to take second.

But sitting right next to me was the consistency of Scissor Me Xerxes.  They came within two points of the all-time record score, though I thought one of the girls was going to give herself a concussion trying to work up her Dirty Dancing knowledge.

You will most likely get to see this outstanding bunch of people in a couple of weeks in the WW, as long as my face didn’t break the camera.

A great night of fun for all, myself included.  See you next week!

Everyone that walked in the door at Scruffy’s had the same look on their faces: What the hell is going on here?!?

We had to make way some Irish…ummm….thing.  I couldn’t tell what they were celebrating, but we were able to break through and get trivia started, albeit a little late.

Tube Sock was back in force, as they were able to nail down third place, holding off Team Laurie and Uncle Donny’s Playground Van, who had outstanding scores as well.

The Cookie Monsters look like they are going to be a permanent force,a s they edged a one point lead over the socks, taking second place.

But our old regulars Middle Name: Second Guess/Second Room took the game and sweep the rounds with an incredible score!

As always, I had a complete blast.  Normal time next week, so bring the big brains for the best night of the week!!

A full house?  A great crowd?  A fun night for everyone within a two mile radius?  That’s the best we can do???

Well, I guess we’ll have to settle for the most fun night of the week for me, and most people in attendance.

It was another monster night at Scruffy’s.  While I sweated out my dash to Radio Shack for a power plug, everyone waited in anticipation for the best competition of trivia since I started this company.  This is what we’re all about: You have fun, I have fun.

Eleven teams packed the joint, but there were four battling it out for three prizes.  The Schlepping Hoses pullled a monster score, but were relegated to fourth in the always exciting tie-breaker.  Back Dat Ass Up With the Resurrection came in third, with a great trivia shove at the end.

But it all came down to a tie-breaker between defending champion Cookie Monster and returning juggernaught Tube Sock for a one question free-for-all.  And without further ado…

have I ever told you about my fear of termites?  There’s something about an animal that can eat wood and is small enough to bury itself in my eardrum that creeps me out.  I mean, c’mon…can’t we find…

oh crap!  The trivia game!  The Cookie Monsters were closest on their tie-breaker, making a two week winning streak!   We’ll talk more about termites next week.  Seriously…that’s a creepy animal

I love a good night of politically incorrect team names.  It just adds a little something to the score updates, and maybe even produces a few gasps.

We had a fantastic turnout last night.  Maybe we are off the schneid and back to our normal bad selves.

The ladies of Lovely hung in there all night, and had a strong third round…thanks for playing, girls!  The Lawn Wranglers and Jason put up great fights, and Amy T saw past their birthday shots to give a serious run at the prizes.  Amy T is back after a week or two hiatus.  Good to see a strong team back in the mix!

But taking third place with a very consistent night was Michael Vick’s Puppy Chow.  They were just two points behind first place, which was a tie between She Had a Sexy Thorax and…..and now for the name of the night, Tee Ball Stand Pitches Perfect Game at Special Olympics.  With the always heart-stopping tie-breaker question, Thorax shot high on their Google price and won it out.

Thank you every one for making it out, especially on a tough parking night during a ball game.  It makes my night more enjoyable when I see my crew out there.  At least now we have drink specials!

Since the Coors Light Model Search was going on upstairs with our equipment, it took  some bailing wire in the form of Jen to have trivia night.  She was just there to see if she wanted to be a Buzzwordz host, and tuned out to be a host before she ever thought possible.  I was relegated to the DJ booth while she operated the slides.  While this is not exactly rocket science, she did a great job on making it a smooth night!  It took slightly more cleverness than the ”genius” on the Viagra commercials that it took the year 2007 to discover a VCR.

And then there was the competition!

We had some strong teams out there last night.  Merkins were there in force and took round one with a perfect score, but got knocked from their perch by the Pho King Nutz and UCSP, who tied for first and decided to share their victory.  I would have found that to be a remarkable display f sportsmanship if they hadn’t already been sharing all of their beers the entire night. :/

Team Teammates did a remarkable job in their first trivia night, finishing just out of the running.  We hope to see you guys next week.

The Blue Ballers left me hanging as they gave up on the last few questions.  HEY!  Only AA is for quitters!  And yes, you are correct: if you send up the cute girls with the answer sheet, you do get more concessions.  In fact, I am thinking of just adding a bonus point for it every time.

Thank you everyone for a fun night.

We had twelve teams duking it out last night in our little cozy snug!  I got booed by the second question, which is always good to get out of the way in the early part of the game.

But the booing stopped, the teams got serious, and the competition was fierce.

Craptacular took round one, all by himself….wow!  Considering how many teams there were, and how many players, that’s pretty incredible.

The Cookie Monsters decided it was time to stop messing around.  They won round two in impressive fashion, which propelled them to a victory in the entire game.  Ass Patrol had a jaw-dropping round three to take that round, but Cookie Monster was just too much to take.

The winner of my favorite name of the night: I’ll Bring the Vaseline if You Bring the High Fives, followed closely by Punk in Drublic and Dirty Bert and Ernie.  Get your rubber ducky and go clean yourselves up!

It was a fantastic showing, and I appreciate everyone being there.  We’ll see you next week…but only if you bring the vaseline.
