TNON winners, Mugabe Flower Power, also take top prize June 30, 2008

You’d think they dominated from start to finish winning every round and every prize, but actually, they did it the hard way.  Mugabe Flower Power started off very well winning the TNON and enjoying free beer from the get-go, but they had competition from Your Mama, Crippled Ugly and Stupid, and the Butterheads before they were able to win the overall prize by just one point!

Mugabe Flower Power

Mugabe Flower Power

(Quick reminder for any newbies: TNON = Team Name of the Night & the easiest way to get some free beer.)

Your Mama, not to be confused with Your Mom, took charge in the first round and won it easily.  The Your Mom team started a bit late in the first round but it was never really clear what was up with the Mom copycat theme thing.  Anyway, after the domination in the first round, Mugabe Flower Power came back and took round two easily setting up a showdown in the third round like always!

Your Mama

Your Mama

At the end of it all, Mugabe Flower Power pulled out the win by one point with the surprise team, the Butterheads tied with Your Mama for second.  After the tiebreaker, no Mom or Mama won a top prize.  Maybe next week!

 The Butterheads

With all that going on, I didn’t forget that the Cripped, Ugly and Stupid team actually won the third round and enjoyed some beer and a slightly longer stay than they expected.  Good reason to stay, IMHO.  Crippled, Ugly and Stupid

Sweatin’ out the answers in Wheat Ridge June 21, 2008

Apparently some of the regulars knew the air conditioning wasn’t working but for those of us who didn’t, it was one hot evening!  I was actually glad the room wasn’t packed like it has been lately.  Still, with ten teams and eight finishers, it was another good night of competition and just plain weirdness.  I am definitely blaming the full moon.

So, here’s how it went down.  Tea Bagging in Iowa and the Bombay Manhole Killers went head to head each round all night.  Fortunately, the TNON champions came through again with a great name and won their beer that way or it would have been entirely hogged by the two routinely unstoppable teams!

After all was said and sweated, the Bombay Manhole Killers eeked out a one-point victory for the overall prize.  For those of you wondering what Bombay Manhole Killers is all about, google ‘India manhole deaths’, it’s a messed up story really.

Bombay Manhole Killers

Something crazy was in the water or was it the beer?  Whatever it was, the Tea Bagging in Iowa team was en fuego on Wednesday night.  Beyond R-rated so I won’t detail it here.  Maybe they were a bit distracted by their insanity, as they missed the top score by one point.  Still, a strong showing, as always!

Tea Bagging in Iowa

Back with a vengeance the TNON champions came through after a week or so off.  At this point, I just expect them to be the most creative.  No one else seems to be able to channel their brilliance so congrats on another win!  This week they were This Just In: Kobe tries to take championship against its will!

This Just In: Kobe tries to take championship against its will!

There were strong showings by several other teams but no one could quite match the two champions.  Still, a big thank you to the rest of you guys for hanging in through the hot evening and bringing your A games!

The Rookies (thanks for playing - come back again soon!)

The 11th doctor (maybe no longer flying solo after his teammate bailed to a distant Colorado town as the champs might have recruited him!)

Woodchuck and the Clean Up Hitters deftly avoided my photography.  Fine, be that way.

Let’s hope there is A/C next week and I am certain there won’t be another full moon.  Enthusiasm is still welcome and wanted so bring it again next week, Wednesday at 8pm at Old Chicago Wheat Ridge!  See you all then!

It’s gonna be quick and not very dirty this week, folks.  A quick reminder to have your coffee before you get to trivia this week.  It makes it better for everyone.

Despite the sleepy room, the scores weren’t bad overall.  Team $5 Gas took round one after barely winning the tiebreaker over The Tripes.   Toro toro tomato swiped the second round from everyone by one point.  Then, the third round we went back to the battle with $5 Gas and The Tripes, and along with the oil companies and OPEC, $5 Gas won and won big.

$5 Gas (it’s just around the corner)

The Tripes (to be trimmed to six next time)

Third place was awarded since we had eleven teams start and finish.  No quitters this week!  By only one point over two other teams, Now go away or we shall taunt you a 2nd time took the beer prize.

Just one point out of the winnings were both Iron Lotus and Toro toro tomato.  Good efforts!

Like the Rockies, Round one was rough, Rounds two and three were hot June 7, 2008

At least that’s my hopeful prediction.  You guys didn’t give up after a disastrous, lowest-scoring ever, first round, and the Rockies are on fire after defending Torrealba.  Let’s hope it’s a great June and July for everyone!

Fifteen teams this week and a full house as always means that I will be awarding a 3rd place prize pitcher of beer of your choice from now on.  We just need to maintain this consistent number of teams and I’m happy to pitch in for all your efforts!

Round one this week went to the “newbie” team of the Lost Planet Airmen.  Technically, they aren’t new and one of the team members has been on a winning team before, but I have been trying to talk the other team members into playing for months and they were reluctant until this time.  After getting the early beer prize, they enthusiastically competed to the end and liked it.  Plus, they are the first ever winners of the third place Pitcher of Choice prize.  I expect to see you guys again (gotta get that free beer!) and I will get your picture.  :-)

Round two was a complete turnaround from Round one and the Squirrel Masters team took over from there.  They won the overall prize with authority, six points better than their friendly rivals, the We’ll Never Concede team which took 2nd overall.  Way to make a comeback!

Squirrel Masters (they just couldn’t get over the excellent health benefits of eating squirrel)

We’ll Never Concede (like Hillary, it was just a matter of time)

Tonights TNON went to the Outlaws to Bee team for their creative use of the Buzzwordz Bee and as a congratulations on the engagement of two regular players!

Outlaws To Bee

Team names were good all-around on this night.  My personal favorite was Friends of Jen.  I don’t actually know these people, but it was a nice try for the free beer.  They became rather bitter, however, when I didn’t award them the beer prize and the rest of the night, they wrote down NO LONGER Friends of Jen.

(No longer) Friends of Jen

Our buddy, usually referred to as the Illiterate Peasant, flew solo again this time, but didn’t do quite as well as last time.  Thanks again, though, for the great answer sheets!  I really love having those!!  This week he deemed himself Beavis and Bama do America

Beavis and Bama do America

I’m sad to hear that one half of the Indiana Jones and the Frozen Cheesecake team will be moving, temporarily, to Montrose.  :-(  I hope that doesn’t mean the end of you guys playing!  I will sorely miss your hilarious answers to those questions you don’t have a good guess on.  Hope to see you back!

Indiana Jones and the frozen cheesecake (Yes, that’s the frozen cheesecake on the table.  It really was frozen.)

The usual TNON winners were not happy at all that I made a different selection this week.  See, normally, I call out the names and let the crowd decide by applause.  And, of course, when I did get to calling out team names with the first round scores, theirs - Virgins are only good once - got the most hoots and hollers as usual.  They got some free beer anyway.  I’m just so darn nice.  You guys have it easy.  All of you.  Just wait til I go on vacation or something.

Virgins are only good once

As for the rest of the teams, we’ll here they are:

Trivia is supposed to be tough, and there should be a 3rd place prize May 31, 2008

It was a tough night, especially the 3rd round.  We had all-time low scores in that round.  Hate it or not, it kept the scores much tighter than usual.   And, we had three different round winners.  Everyone likes that.

Starting things off well was the Chutes and Ladders are More My Speed half of the Illiterate Peasant’s regular team.  With a tie for the win in the first round they seemed to not need their other half, Space Station Brown Cow.  However, as the game wore on, it was clear that separating the brains on that team was debilitating.  Everyone appreciates that you guys didn’t try to play with seven people, though, especially me!

BIG THANKS again to the Illiterate Peasant for the super-fancy, (and well-cut), answer sheets!  Many player comments of appreciation were noted on Wednesday.  :-)

Chutes and Ladders are More My Speed and Space Station Brown Cow

Winning the second round and taking second place overall, the Jen Long Name team was up to their usual dominance.  First place was only one point away, but then again, so was third.  Their actual team name went something like, Jen likes long team names so something something, we want free beer, or something like that.  I shortened it to Jen Long Name.  Clever cats you guys are!

Jen Long Name

Before we get to the winners of the trivia, how about the TNON?  (Reminder:  TNON = Team Name of the Night)  It was players choice night again and the vote was for Angry sex is awesome.  Let’s pick a fight tonight.  This team has won the TNON more times than any other team.  They have the game figured out, folks.  Can you beat them?

Angry sex is awesome, let’s pick a fight tonight.

Now, back to the game.  After losing the tiebreaker in the first round and then a poor showing in the second round, it was quite the accomplishment for the I Like Ike team to come back in the torturous third round for the win.  Only by one point, but that’s all it takes!

I Like Ike

A quick Welcome Back note to the The one that says MF on it team after a long hiatus.  Glad to see you guys again!

And now, the rest of you sexy smarties:

Johnny Drama is my Hero

Hiding in the Bushes

We Need a Name

Winston

Team C

Salt and Pepper Mafia (actually their parents) and they were the Jelly Beans

It wasn’t as crazy a night as we had all through April and the first weeks of May, but with 13 teams and difficult trivia, it was feeling pretty busy to me.  Talks about a third place prize will happen.  With consistently 10 plus teams (13 plus for 5 of the last 6 weeks) I hear you guys when you think that is reasonable.  I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks again for a great Wednesday as always at Old Chicago in Wheat Ridge!

See you next time,

Surprise, surprise, I’m blogging on Thursday!  It would have seemed crazy to call a night with ten teams calm last year when we were just getting started with trivia at Old C’s Wheat Ridge, but not anymore.  After weeks of overflow and overwhelming your host (it was good though!) we had a nice solid night with a full room of smart people.

Starting off the evening right was our friend, the “Illiterate Peasant”, who was expecting two teammates to show up eventually, but decided to go for the team name competition before they showed up with them in mind.  With the name tres borrachos (three drunks) I just couldn’t resist giving him the win.   His teammates showed up eventually, and got to enjoy the free beer too.   I don’t think they really lived up to their name, but they did come in third place overall!

tres borrachos

Two familiar teams battled it out for the top prize last night.  Ted’s Tumor took the first round after winning the tiebreaker.  Kennedy Curse took the second round clean.  Ted’s Tumor came back in the third round to win the round, but not by enough, and Kennedy Curse won by two points.   Excellent battle!

Kennedy Curse

Ted’s Tumor

Newbie team, Joey’s Revenge made a great showing for the first time coming in 4th.  Hope to see you guys back next week!

Joey’s Revenge

As always, Team X made a solid showing, but even with a new player couldn’t quite money.  Love you guys anyway!

Team X

Down to just two players last night, with occasional help from another player more interested in pool, the Rich Farmers had a tough night points-wise.  At least you could hear me this time!

Rich Farmers

The other new team, It’s You McMuffin, gave up at the end, but that’s ok.  You can join in or quit at anytime!  Quitters don’t tend to win though.  ;-)

It’s you McMuffin!

Sort-of combined teams, the Come back kids and No Shot always have fun at Wednesday night trivia, but it’s more the beer than the trivia, I know.

Well, there you have it!  A calmer, but still quality night of trivia at Old C’s WR.  Just what I needed after a busy birthday week!

That’s what it feels like from my point of view folks!  In a good way, of course!!  The request has come in for a second night of trivia at Old Chicago in Wheat Ridge and it is under discussion with management.  Stay posted for the latest.

Meanwhile, we had an overflowing room and record-breaking competition Wednesday night.  The Mad Cows made a return visit to avenge their loss by a hair and took the whole thing on the last question.  Nicely done guys!  After last time, when they missed the first four or so questions and lost by one, it seemed likely this could happen.

Mad Cows

Typhoon Happy Hour and Pope ET II tied for place, only one point behind the Mad Cows and after the tiebreaker, the alien Pope team was victorious.    It was another close night all around!

Pope ET II

Team Name of the Night, hereafter referred to as TNON, went to Saved by the Bell still teaches me life lessons.  It was another executive decision of mine.  I’m still ok with it.

OK, so I expect to hear from all of you that you have been waiting with bated breath for this week’s blog when I see you Wednesday.  I thought I had lost my ghetto scoresheet but it turned up so your wait is over.   BTW, my ceiling is fixed, my house is back in order, and my printer is once again available so this coming Wednesday I will be back up to par.

It was a night of great team names and solid competition with a new challenger.  Four teams were tied at the end of round two but the third round belonged to newbies Shut the Fuque Up and 5 German Babies in a Freezer.  After tying for the final round and final score, the 5 German Babies team pulled out the tiebreaker win!  Nice job to both teams!!

Winners of the Team Name of the Night went outside the usual current events box with Ru Paul is so hot… she’s a dude? Give me another beer… I’d still do her!  This week I went back to player’s choice and that was nearly unanimous!

Ru Paul etc., etc.

Another clever name of the night was the “stick pony” team.  They drew a stick pony and since I am not as good at deciphering symbols as the artist formerly known as Prince and once again as Prince, I didn’t know what to call it until they spelled it out for me.  Clever, though.  Props.

Our other notable teams:

Dungeon Daddy Day Care (my choice for team name of the night)

8 Bells Tolls for Thee

Team X

Clogged Toilets

Wolverine, Badger and 2 Gophers

There you have it!  Another rockin’ night at Old Chicago in Wheat Ridge!   Looking forward to a great summer of trivia.   See you Wednesday at 8!

Strange trivia to finish a strange April May 1, 2008

Posted by buzzwordz in Jen Hoppe, Old Chicago - Wheat Ridge, Wheat Ridge.
add a comment

The good news is that the snow might be done for the season.  And the Avalanche did win the first round of the playoffs.   Otherwise, it’s been a rough April for the Rockies and the Colorado fans.  There is no explanation for the oddities of the trivia last night so let’s just look forward to a beautiful May (my birthday month, so it should be) and the Rockies getting their bats going.

It was an odd night at Old Chicago Wheat Ridge, and it was crazy busy again at the same time!  Great energy last night people!  You make it so easy to go to work.

The team name of the night wasn’t left to the folks vote as I usually do.  I made an executive decision instead.  The winner was… Team X but…we should win for sticking with “X” and not selling out for a pitcher of beer.  For not selling out, they got the pitcher.

Nice work.  But, no, it won’t fly again.  :-)

Last’s weeks killer one-man team, the Illiterate Peasant returned with reinforcements, this time they called themselves Montezuma’s Revenge (what is the deal with the digestive issues? see past posts for an explanation) and started out with a perfect (including the bonus point) first round.  It looked like it might be a scary night for everyone else, but the other 13 teams came on strong in the second round and they fell to 4th overall.

That’s the elusive “Illiterate Peasant” on the left.

The always competitive, 99% of the time all-female team Albert Hoffman’s Last Trip, came on strong in the second round and won the tiebreaker to get the beer.   New team, the Undergarment Girls were their main competition for that round and the remainder of the game.  Though the Albert Hoffman team won the third round, on the very last question, they tied for the top overall score and then lost the final tiebreaker to the Girls.  Great competition last night!!

The Undergarment Girls, they almost left before it was over.

Albert Hoffman’s Last Trip.  It was women vs. women last night.  Sorry you missed it.

Just barely finishing out of the winnings, was Loose Lips “Bruce”sters.   Another good team name from you guys.   Two points behind the winners is not bad at all.   See you next week!

The Guys at the Bar returned to their old bar stools and their old name, but not their old dominance.  They definitely need the ladies back to help now.  They definitely got beaten badly by women last night.  (I’m sure they liked it actually.)

Cleverly named Answers and Copying Answers threw me off at first.  See, Answers was the first team name when they had less than six players, then when the rest of their friends showed up, they split into Answers and Copying Answers and I was confused, momentarily.  Anyway, regardless of the copying (or not) they just enjoyed the odd trivia about white people and birds and didn’t mind not winning much.

Our usual first round winners jinxed themselves this week, I think, with their team name, Winners don’t chug the free pitcher before the 2nd round starts.  This was the first week in at least three that they didn’t win that pitcher.  Next time, new team name.

The Wings team, yes, named for the evil Red Wings, actually was sneakily named by a rogue member of the team.  I’ve been informed that he will no longer be invited.  We shall see.

That’s him on the far right.  Naughty.

With a strong showing but only two players makes it tough with competition like last night, the Cheezits team did well, but like the Rockies, just can’t quite close the deal these days.

Team Towelie, hiding in the back, made a strong showing but it was tough against the ladies last night.

New teams Spastic Burps and In it 2 win it almost made it to the end but not quite.  Thanks for playing and hope to see you again soon!

Spastic Burps

In it 2 win it

Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of Yo Mamma, they finished quite strong after starting in the 2nd round nearly winning the third round.  Next time I’ll get you guys.

So, thanks again for an outstanding night of trivia!  The snow waited until today so things are looking up.  Here’s to a great May!

See y’all next week,

Jen

Thanks to everyone for having your Red Bulls before coming to trivia at Old Chicago this week!  I’m sure it was the gorgeous weather that made you all come alive again, not your humble hostess Jen, but whatever it was I am grateful.

Some good team names this week too!  You guys are finally learning or maybe you just really need free beer now since gas prices are so high.  Anyway, the competition will continue!

Congrats to Pimp my Pope for the audience-selected team name of the week!  Plus they won the overall prize despite a very strong showing from a one-man team.

Illiterate Peasant usually has a bigger team, but with eleven points in round two and the win for that round, he was a force to be reckoned with all on his own.  Nicely done!  (He didn’t want his picture taken.)

The third round determined the overall prizes as usual, and we had two teams tied for the $15 second place prize: Soylent Green is Charlton Heston and Team Camel Toe.  The tiebreaker was close, but Camel Toe took the prize.

Soylent Green

Camel Toe

Winning the first round has become a habit for Douglas Bruce Kicked me and all I got was this lousy team name but that’s the end of their dominance each week.  Again, I’m sure it’s all about getting that early beer.

Two teams had absolutely no confidence in themselves but played anyway and that’s always appreciated.  So, thanks anyway to We’re going to lose and No Expectations.

Ok, first of all, I am SUPER late on my blog this week and I am sorry for that.  Had a bit of a water issue in the house.  Everything is ok now, so you can expect next week’s blog on time…

It was over 80 degrees on Tuesday and then, as usual, the weather turned on Wednesday and we had snow.  Despite the snow, everyone made it to trivia on time, but forgot to have their caffeine.  NO MORE TRIVIA ZOMBIE NIGHTS PLEASE!!  I was ready to come over and slap every one of you guys awake!

The team names were better this week and thank you for that!  I guess it took ALL of your energy to come up with those, eh?  Anyway, congrats to Polygamist Knows Best for the win on the name of the night!   I like it.

Returning after an undetermined length, but definitely long, absence were the Mad Cows.  And they returned with a vengeance, even started four questions late, they tied the Banos Frijoles for the overall lead and the third round lead and then won the tiebreaker.  It really couldn’t have been any closer between those two teams!

Nice to see you guys again!  Hope to see you again soon!

Oh so close!  See you next week!

Seeing as how I am so late on this, I will cut things short this time but here are your other mugs ’cause I know you’ve been waiting so patiently for them!!

Warmonger, Elitist and Annie Oakey (very clever name you guys!)

I want a mustache ride - weird, but interesting!

Carmello Jello Shooters (the theme of the week for team names was certainly poor Mello).  Unfortunately I don’t recall which other teams were named what.  Sorry guys, here are your pics anyway!

All should be back to normal next week folks!!  Until Wednesday…

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow will keep me from Old C Wheat Ridge trivia April 10, 2008

Yeah, I know, you guys thought I wouldn’t make it since there was supposed to be snow, but I was not afraid.   It was a bit crazy driving in the rain on the oh-so-well-drained Colorado highway system, but after only about three hydroplaning moments I survived.   So, it was on, and it was yet another night of major competition.  Wednesday nights are getting to be serious trivia challenges.  It’s scaring away newcomers for sure, but with a full room, I guess it doesn’t really matter!

I had to push a bit but the creativity of some teams finally came out and better team names emerged.   The audience choice for best name of the night ended up being the overall winners of the night too.  So, nice job once again Buy One, Get One, Free Tibet

With only four players, and not winning the first or second rounds, that was an impressive third round guys!  And, a great team name!

Sitting in the back once again, and liking the darkness, Take this job and shove it took the first round cleanly by one point.   They looked to be ready to take on the tough veteran crowd, but it wasn’t to be.  Still, a great first round and with the bonus prize of FREE BOWLING at Golden Lanes!  Thanks to Golden Lanes for the extra perks last night!

Also cashing in on the free bowling as the second place winners was Hair in the Bean Dip.  It was a solid second round with 13 points and a clean win also.  Barely losing out the top prize of the night by two points, the variations on Bean Dip team is one to watch out for!

The Honky Lips have dominated in the past, most especially with the Irish trivia but tonight they missed out on second place by just a single point.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a comment for a quote here, because they ran out of the bar immediately afterwards.   It was raining again so maybe they were in a hurry to get home.

Celebrating a birthday was Carlos on the Thank You Weather, We didn’t win, but We didn’t LOSE team.  They enjoyed their birthday pitcher of beer in the first round and then got fiesty over the gender-biased category of Arts and Literature.  I explained to them that Sports was also a gender-biased category but I don’t think that satisfied them.  Anyway, happy birthday to Carlos and thanks to the team for keeping the room alive always!

Newbie team Redux stuck out the whole game and hopefully had fun!  It is tough to play against the extreme brain power of the veteran teams at Old C WR!  Thanks for playing guys and if you come back you’ll get some free beer from me!

The Creepy Zippers had a very solid game and only finished five points behind the second place team.  Maybe next week they can get those extra five…

Also finishing only five points behind the second place team, was Team C, who truly flew solo this time and kudos to you for that performance!

The Cellar Dwellers gave up in the final round, but that’s cool with me.  I’m glad to have you guys play each week!  One night will be your night, bro.

Special thanks to Adam for making a surprise appearance and thanks as always to everyone who makes trivia on Wednesday nights at Old Chicago in Wheat Ridge the best night of the week!

See you next time!

Iron Lotus falls to the 3rd Grade Mafia April 3, 2008

Posted by buzzwordz in Jen Hoppe, Old Chicago - Wheat Ridge, Wheat Ridge.

What started out looking like it was going to be a very large spanking from the ladies of Iron Lotus, ended up being a very close race at the end.  Your humble trivia hostess, Jen, could barely keep up with the madness again last night.  It was awesome!

After a PERFECT score in the first round, Iron Lotus also tied for first in the second round and then won the tiebreaker.  It seems somewhat logical that they might have had too much beer in them in the final round to keep up the domination.  Maybe that was the 3rd Grade Mafia’s strategy?  Dunno.  Iron Lotus did manage overall second place and it was a fine performance overall!

Once again having to split up, the 3rd Grade Mafia and the 3rd Grade Mafia Sucks (more than the 3rd Grade Mafia) finally figured out how to win.  See, you put all the ladies on one team and the guys on the other and the ladies show you how it is done.  That’s right we first place was an all women team and so was second place.  An excellent night, IMHO.

The other half came in third place.  Not bad for the boys.  But they didn’t like it.

I took it to the entire room to determine the best team name of the night and the victors were the same clever folks as the last few weeks.  So, nicely done, Lap Dances are better when the stripper is crying.  Free beer keeps coming your way so I expect to keep seeing you each week!

The always oversized team which was supposedly split into Blue Balls and Salty Balls, kept it fun as they usually do.  No prizes this week though.

New team the Dim Wizards gave it a good go, but clearly felt outmatched by the serious veteran trivia talent that Old C’s WR has.  Keep coming and you get smarter.  Really!

Last week’s winners, newly named Bitch n Bama, returned to keep the title, but it was a tall order and they couldn’t quite money this time.  It was nice to not have to dish out cash for the tab though, eh?

Team X had two great weeks in a row, but even with a perfect five point question (they know their NFL) they couldn’t get into the medals last night.

It was the last night for the Desheaths to play, as they prefer Sports trivia, but thanks for coming out a few times guys and I hope to see you again sometime!

After a tough baseball trip, the Clean up Hitters came in to drink off the pain.  Trivia helps the pain too, but not as much as beer.

Team C was all alone until mid-game but still had a good score.  Glad to see you as always!

The Cellar Dwellers played a casual game which is fine with me.  Eat, drink, and answer trivia questions as you please.  That’s the point!

All the way in the back corner, and loaded with some kind of work or something, the Alamosa Waterboarding team got their exercise bringing up answers.   Unfortunately they weren’t always right.   But they are always entertaining.  Thanks guys!

So, there you have it!  Another standing room only night at Old C’s in Wheat Ridge.  The ladies owned the evening but it was tough competition and fun as it always is for me.

See everyone next week!

It’s all about the thirds March 27, 2008

Just like the Avalanche started out a bit slow, and then improved throughout the game, so did newbie team Illegal Bean Dip.  By the third period, with a 3 goal lead, the Avs had it pretty much wrapped up and Illegal Bean Dip absolutely pounded the rest of the teams with 21 points in the 3rd round.  Nice work to both teams!!  Good game plan.  Now let’s take it to the playoffs!

Hope to see you guys back next week!

Once again the original Guys at the Bar team had too many players and had to split up producing Sambora’s Bail Bondsmen and Obama’s Crazy Preacher.  Splitting up the brains inevitably results in losing first place but the Sambora half did manage second this time.

Only one point back in third place was Team X.  Another outstanding performance from the guys!!

Back in the corner with way more than six people at their table, was team Get Some.  We discussed it before the game began and decided that there were less than six people at the table who would actually be useful in the game so they didn’t have to split up.  We were right.  ;-)  The game was distracting, that’s what it really was.

It was a tough decision but once again, Gov. Spitzer brought out the best in team names, and Gov. Spitzer’s blue ball parade took the pitcher of beer.  That’s all they took this time, but that’s enough reason to show up each week!

Not at all least, the Bar Folks team this week did very well but they had way too many shots.  I think it was one for every goal scored or something.

I’m sorry I somehow missed the Dung Ravens when I took pictures.  I keep telling you people not to go to the bathroom in between the first and second rounds but you just don’t listen.  Next time I’ll get ya.

It’s a great time of year, Spring, Rockies season starting, Avs playoffs (hopefully!) and trivia continues on.  See you all next week!

NCAA brackets and trivia, yep, we can do both March 20, 2008

It was the last hours to fill out those NCAA brackets for the Old Chicago game and everyone made it just in time.  We planned it that way, of course, show up for trivia right at 8, get your bracket done and win some beer!  Even your humble hostess Jen, the ultimate novice in NCAA betting, joined in and I do plan on winning it all.  ;-)

After last week’s rowdy crowd, it seemed like a night at the opera last night rather than Wednesday trivia in Wheat Ridge, but with ten teams it was a solid night of competition.  Everyone was on their game and scores were good.

Diamond Dave dominated the first round but then had to bail and kindly donated their pitcher of beer to the team that was second at the time, Alternate Ending.  Nice gesture, guys.  Hope to see you back for the whole game sometime!

Alternate Ending enjoyed their beer and were very grateful.

End of the second round, and we had a three-way tie between Fremen, Dow 5000 and the Clean Up Hitters.  Very close guesses (between the teams) on when those yummy peanut butter girl scout cookies first came about, but the Clean Up Hitters were the closest and I was very happy to see them win for the first time.  Well done guys!

That was the closest to glory that the Fremen got last night, but it was great to have them around as always.

The game was decided in the third round and despite not having half of their usual team with them, Dow 5000 got it together in the end and won by three points.  Hope to see the better half of the team back next week.  ;-)

It came down to a tie for second place overall between vets Team X and the Knights who play Wii.  Tiebreaker went to Team X!  Wooohoooo!  Team X has been with me since the beginning of trivia at Old C’s WR and it was great to see it pay off finally!  Of course, it is always fun just to be there because I am such an amazing hostess.

Almost back into the winnings, but just one tiebreaker out, the Knights who play Wii are ready for a comeback next week.  I can feel it.

Last weeks winners, newly named Vagtastic Voyage, lost one team member and lost it completely this week.  Well, they didn’t win anything this time anyway.  Next week is a new game.  See you then!

Back in the corner, the Desheaths played the whole game but were much more into their brackets I guess.  Still, glad to have you in the game.  Next week, no brackets to deal with.

Team C (for Chris) had some help here and there, and had a solid score, but was definitely more into the brackets than the trivia this time.  He’s the one who talked me into doing my own bracket but still let me make stupid selections.  That’s Chris on the left and Tom on the right.  Madness is on.

We will be back next week.  No rest for the weary at Old Chicago trivia.  No breaks for March Madness or anything else for that matter.  It’s all good.   Best of luck to everyone with their brackets!!

See yas next week!

Spitzer what?!? March 13, 2008

Yes, it was another nearly out of control evening at Old Chicago Wheat Ridge!  If I had enough time to note every hilarious answer (wrong ones of course) for the night, I would still be there.  With fifteen teams that played at some point and eleven finishers, it was great competition from new teams and old tonight!

Team name of the night went out to newbies, Spitzer Swallows?  Hope you enjoyed the beer because everyone enjoyed your humor!

Please come back again!

Tonight’s champions, another new team, had no idea how perfect their team name was until the last question of the night.  It was in the cards from the beginning, I guess.  It did have the unfortunate effect of helping other teams with that final question, but surprisingly not all of them.  (DUH!)  Nice job Two Girls, One Cup!

See you guys next Wednesday!

Second place honors, in a seriously tight competition, went to Jesus Chrysler Drives a Dodge this week.  Not their usual first place finish, but I think it was ok this time to be sloppy seconds.

The Wombats returned with waaaaaaaaaaay too many players, so they split into two teams and created the Herpes is Forever team.   They had enough players for three teams, but still only walked away with a free pitcher of beer for a round win.  Careful sharing those answers, Judge Jen is on the watch. ;-)

Vets Superbad came back to reclaim their glory from the St. Patty’s trivia set, but were unable to do so tonight.  At least no more of their team members broke anything since I last saw them.

New regulars, You Look Like I Need a Drink, grew from three to six players throughout the night but still didn’t make the money.  Keep trying - it’s bound to happen one day!

With the always odd team name of the week, Fear of Hedgehogs made a good showing tonight but it was a tough night.  Hope you enjoyed the beers anyway!

Once again, grading papers while doing trivia did not seem to help the Lion Os, though they were in it to the end.

Team C returned after a week off and by himself did just fine.  It’s a task taking on the madness of all the regular big teams.  It takes balls!  (Yes, there are others in the picture, but Chris, on the right, only got help at the end.)

Last, but never least, Team X had four solid players this week and an excellent third round but when with their limited knowledge of fencing, it was over.  Though Light Sabres in every color was a nice answer.

So, there you have it!  The room was full, the trivia was good, the beer was flowing, St. Patty’s Day is coming.  Thanks to everyone for another great night!  Remember, St. Patty’s Day at Old Chicago will be wild with green pizzas and green Coors Light!   And, next week, a new suprise trivia category.

See you then!

When I know the answers, yes, it’s easy trivia March 7, 2008

Ok, maybe not easy, but certainly easier than usual.   And the high scores proved it!  Seven veteran teams took on two newbie teams and it was really no contest.  Don’t despair, Chicken Ucker Pucker and Duets and Donkey Punches, if you play more often you get smarter.  Really!

Chicken Ucker Pucker actually did quite well for first-timers!

Duets and Donkey Punches gave up before it was over, but who can blame them?  Every smart person on the west side of town shows up for Wednesday night trivia at Old Chicago in Wheat Ridge.

With scores relatively even in the first two rounds, the Superdelegates and Reverend Jim Jones Kool Aid Stand dropped the hammer on the rest of the teams in the 3rd.  It came down to the final question and the Superdelegates came out one point ahead to take it all.  It was a nice comeback for them after last week when they had to split up to play with all of their less-trivia-savvy guests.

Now, they are off to try to clean up the election mess.  Good luck with that!

Reverend Jim Jones Kool Aid Stand (formerly known as Newman) scored the pitcher of beer in the 3rd round but missed out on the top prize, barely.   They always say they don’t want to play, but clearly they love to.  I mean, why would they keep coming back every week if they didn’t?  Unless they are just at the bar all the time?  Hmmmm.

3rd place, which gets you nothing but a note on this blog, was taken by the returning Lion Os.  Grading papers and doing trivia doesn’t seem to work well so next time swap the papers for some beer and I bet your score improves!

Slots of fun returned this week with what they surely thought would be the key to winning: their parents!  Unfortunately Dad thinks he knows more than he really does and the kids just kept trusting him.  That didn’t work out too well, points-wise.  So next week, bring two more players and with a full team I’m sure you guys can get some free beer at least!

As always, Don’t ask about the tadpoles (whatever does that mean?), had some of the funniest answers of the night.  Maybe one night I will just give points for the most creative answers to each question.   Not this time, though.  Good to see you guys!

Minus Marco, the Clean up hitters brought back their female trivia whiz, but even she couldn’t get the guys into the top scores this week.

Last, the Shandy Gaffers actually only officially played the second round even though they were there for the entire first round.  Next week they will play from the beginning because they really didn’t want to pay for their beer.

After the seriously challenging St. Patty’s trivia, it was nice to get back to normal.  And I really didn’t want to wear my ugly green sweater again.  No guarantees on the level of difficulty for next week’s trivia but I do promise there won’t be a theme!  Sorry for the day late blog this week.  It’s been a busy one!

See y’all next time!

Madness, and it isn’t even March yet February 28, 2008

Tonight was the Old Chicago St. Patrick’s celebration kickoff party and a party it was!  Fifteen teams played at some point and eleven made it all the way through.  It was overwhelming - in a good way!  The Av’s won the shootout.  The Irish-themed trivia was tough, but fun.  Patrick Duffy is not the star of Grey’s Anatomy.  Overall, it was an insanely good evening.

Superbad came back this week with a serious vengenance - no one was even close to them once we reached the final question of the night!  They groaned about the Irish theme like the rest of you did, but I don’t think they will complain again.  Notice that they doubled their handicapped section from last week.  Obviously, that didn’t hurt their trivia skills.  Let’s not break anything else this week, okay?

Team Newman started out slow but had a great second round.  They managed to be the only real threat to Superbad and tied that round.  Winning the tiebreaker by a good margin (no there is not a pub for every 14 people in Ireland, Superbad) gave them a pitcher of beer to down while they finished the game, in second place.  Nicely done with the tough trivia tonight!

I did throw out the challenge to come up with better team names to everyone, but some of the vets like keeping their old ones.  Or maybe they just aren’t very creative.  Either way, my two favorite team names of tonight included the Irish theme: Bite My Lucky Charm and Irish I had a Beer

Bite My Lucky Charm and Does my wart bother you? came as one huge group tonight and had to split into separate teams.  This proved to be an issue for them as neither managed to place or win any beer.  At least not from trivia.  Old C’s had Mike, the leprechaun, with his bucket of gold (reach in and pick out a gold piece that may give you a prize) so maybe they got something there?  I hope so.  This half here is Bite

And, here is Wart

Thanks for bringing the party each week to trivia night!  See you next time!

The other most clever team name, Irish I had a beer, belonged to the former Team X.  With a vastly expanded team this week, their score was quite competitive on any regular night! (Tonight was no regular night.)

Great name, guys!  Buzzwordz Trivia Names Hall of Fame will be blessed with your presence.

While they had a bit of trouble with the themed trivia tonight, I almost was glad because Squid brain in a jar gives the best ridiculous answers when they haven’t got a good guess.  From now on I will be saving those to mention here on the blog!  I’ve been selfishly keeping them to myself until now.

We had a surprise visit from 2/3 of Megateam this week!  They were one of our first teams way back when trivia first started at Old C WR.  After one key player left for Cali, they hadn’t been back.  Good showing this time - hope to see you guys again!

The always entertaining Clean Up Hitters made it back this week plus one player.  Unfortunately, that didn’t really help their overall score, but entertainment is valuable and I am glad they have become regulars.  Best of luck to Marco who is off to play baseball for St. Louis!

Relatively newbies, Team O sat in the back and sort of gave up (I don’t really blame them considering how much Superbad dominated but anyway) toward the end.  But, that’s ok, Irish trivia will be gone next week.  Normal trivia will return.  Everything will be ok.  See you then!

Babaganoosh hung on to the end despite the difficult competition and I applaud you for that!  The party atmosphere was good even though the trivia was hard.  Look forward to seeing you again next week.

Last, and only least because they only made it for the third round, The Goods came in with an excellent round, but no one could catch the leaders tonight.   Change your schedules, whatever it takes.  Trivia starts at 8!

Crazy night!  I loved it.  Thanks to all of you for making Wednesday nights absolutely rock!  Next week we are back to “normal” trivia, I promise.  No more vacations or snow storms either so I will see you then!

Back to Business as Usual with Better Team Names February 21, 2008

Soooo good to see familiar faces back this week at Old Chicago in Wheat Ridge!  I thought you had abandoned me after my two-week hiatus.  We had nine solid teams from start to finish and the competition was good.  Thanks for the much better team name effort this week too.  I will start giving out beers for the best team names each week to keep this up.

First round was tight with everyone, but scores were low, so I figured when More Popular than Jesus (pronounced Hay-Seus) managed to remember that the one-hit wonder band’s name had Radicals in it, I would give them half a point.  Turned out, that was the difference in the round so they gladly took their pitcher of beer!  Always happy to help.

MPTJ held on for second overall last night and get my award for Most Improved Team in 2008 so far.

The overall winners also had the best team name of the night.  I have to mention that because I usually give them hell for such bad team names.  So, thank you, Beef Recall - It’s What’s for Dinner!  And, congrats on the big win.  Missed you guys!

New team, Polar Opposites, stayed no more than a couple points behind the leaders all night, but couldn’t quite get to the top.  With only two players, 3rd place is not bad.  Hope to see you guys back.  Beers are on me if you come next week!  And I will get your picture!

The Clean Up Hitters returned but short some players this week.  I appreciate the enthusiasm from the young team as they reminded me all night that most of the questions involved things that occurred before they were born.  (The one on the right, mostly.)

Team Superbad made a return appearance, and had a disabled member that they actually made to bring up the answer!  I was appalled.  It must have been a rough night for them.  ;-)

Welcome goes out to new team BMF:

Come back next week and play again!  See, it’s fun!

Wrong Week to Stop Sniffing Glue turned out to be true, as Josh and Molly didn’t manage to place.  Competition is tough at Old C’s WR!

As always, it was great to have Team X in the house!

And, Unfashionably Late, as they were, would’ve done better had they arrived on time.  See you guys next week at 8!

So, next week is the St. Patrick’s Day kickoff party at Old Chicago in Wheat Ridge!  Be sure to wear your best GREEN.   There will be cool specials and a new mini-tour so I better see everyone there next Wednesday at 8pm!

’til then!

Newbies rock Old C’s February 14, 2008

After two weeks without me, it was the night of the newbies at Old C’s in Wheat Ridge.  Guess I had better not take any time off again soon.  Kidding aside, Josh filled in for me last week and roped in a new team that I met this week so kudos to him!

As for tonight, we had a great group of creative newbies with better-than-usual team names.  Top name tonight was Michael Vick’s school for disobedient pit bulls sponsored by PETA and just to make it better, they happened to come out the big winners…

After a somewhat slow start, MVSFDPBSBP came back strong in the final round winning that and the overall prize!  Hope to see you next week!

Josh’s returning team, the Clean Up Hitters, fully expected to win this week but they missed out by two points on the last question.  You see, there was a Marine on the Tampa Bay Canine Society (aka MVSFDPBSBP), and he stole the win with his knowledge of the Army phonetic alphabet.  They did a great job, however, and we look forward to them becoming trivia regulars!

Team X never fails to represent, and this night, as the only REAL regular, he pulled out third place all by himself!  Great to see you as always!

Promising they will return next week was Team Fee, the most unusual team of the week!  They started out with a solid first round but, then after the free beer, had a tough second round and had to bail.  I’m guessing it was tough for little Fee to handle that much booze.  Just a guess.  Next time, moderation please.

I have to once again offer my apologies to team Space Cow and Blueberry.  See, late in the third round when reading scores, I referred to them as Space Cow and Blueballs.  Really, it was a reasonable slip because we had a team Blueballs in the past.

Thanks, finally, to the Naughty Nuns for giving it a shot tonight!

Also, thanks to Josh for making a surprise appearance after his own trivia night was cancelled at the last minute!  I really can’t take a vacation now because he won’t be available to fill in anymore!

It was great to be back and I hope to see some of the regulars back next week along with the newbies who will give them a good challenge!

See ya then,

Jen
