Scruffy’s - Taking It Up the Schnozberry December 6, 2007

Well, the Schnozzberries took it up the Schnozberry, as they struggled with an abysmal round 2. This simply confirms my suspicion that Whitney is giving all of you guys the answers.
With the Schnozzez left to cry in their (free) beer, our other teams duked it out to the very last question.
Alpacas With a Twist and Due to the Writer’s Strike, I Can’t Get a Clever Name tied for second place for the night. Who knew that there could be a three point question about pencils? Writer’s Strike out-tie-breakered (I just made up a word) the Alpacas to take second, while the Long One in the Wrong One were like the toroise to the hare as their consistency, and a really strong third round, took first place.
It was a very strange night, as our regular powerhouses seem to be on a self-imposed time-out. Oh well, that just leaves more free beer for us!
Thank you to Craig the bartender for chipping in and giving away movie tickets as another bonus! Even though we couldn’t get Andrew to hop on the mic for a round, Craig was willing to throw Andrew into the fire anway with the “guess Andrew’s age” question. Embarassment is a beautiful thing.

While most of our teams were back from holiday hangovers, we still had some of our heavy hitters missing. But what does that do? It leaves room for new heavy hitters!
It was a fun night of trivia, and just about everyone won something at some point (or got free booze to douse their sorrows. Hey! That’s just as good as winning!)
Turd Ferguson gave up in the third round, after trying to corral their dogs all night. Two people, two dogs, one Snug? Back Up in That Ass With the Resurrection fought hard all by his lonesome, but in the end, you really do need to watch ESPN once a month just to keep up! And yes, we are going to have more current event questions in the future, so it’s always good to check up here and here pretty often to stay up on the latest. The only problem with regular checks on these is that you have to endure the occasional frightening photo like this:

Anyway.
Strawberry Shortcake and My Girlfriend Tagged Me Out at Shortstop were just one point, ONE POINT, out of the running for the gift certificates in a very tight game.
Swiss Wolf was like the little train that could, plugging away to get the third place nod.
Then we had the name of the night, and the troublemakers of the night, Fist is Also a Verb. While my mother is a very talented woman, and yes, she is lovely as well, she has relatively little to do with the Big 10/ACC Challenge. Or does she? Nice job on second place. Mom would be proud.
But the night belonged to the Psychodelic Elvis’? Elvis’s? Elvi? They at least tied for every round, so they had significant brain lubricant to take a roaring lead in round 3, where I wasn’t sure if they were going to miss a question for a while!
Another good showing, bu i have a feeling that it is going to get uber-competitive once our absent veterans find out that the Bucket of Brilliance has been taken over by newbies.
Thanks again everyone for coming out, and we’ll see you all next week! I gotta go. My Mom is yelling at me to do something productive.

Three rounds with three different winners, and our usual juggernauts were left shaking their heads in disbelief.
Tubesock and Doom Theatre are normally the dominating forces at the Scruff. I think I saw a few tears as they walked away out of the running. Don’t sweat it, fellas. I don’t think any less of you. Now, if you do it again next week…I keed, I keed.
In my modeling debut for the Westword, we had a great night of trivia, and the usual packed house! The Cookie Monsters thought they were going to fall victim to the juggernaut curse, but they had a massive round three. That was enough to work their way into third. I would have said “sneak,” but there was not a sneaking into the cash…it was a pummeling.
Brain Fart won the second round, and held on for dear life in round three to take second.
But sitting right next to me was the consistency of Scissor Me Xerxes. They came within two points of the all-time record score, though I thought one of the girls was going to give herself a concussion trying to work up her Dirty Dancing knowledge.
You will most likely get to see this outstanding bunch of people in a couple of weeks in the WW, as long as my face didn’t break the camera.
A great night of fun for all, myself included. See you next week!

Everyone that walked in the door at Scruffy’s had the same look on their faces: What the hell is going on here?!?
We had to make way some Irish…ummm….thing. I couldn’t tell what they were celebrating, but we were able to break through and get trivia started, albeit a little late.
Tube Sock was back in force, as they were able to nail down third place, holding off Team Laurie and Uncle Donny’s Playground Van, who had outstanding scores as well.
The Cookie Monsters look like they are going to be a permanent force,a s they edged a one point lead over the socks, taking second place.
But our old regulars Middle Name: Second Guess/Second Room took the game and sweep the rounds with an incredible score!
As always, I had a complete blast. Normal time next week, so bring the big brains for the best night of the week!!

A full house? A great crowd? A fun night for everyone within a two mile radius? That’s the best we can do???
Well, I guess we’ll have to settle for the most fun night of the week for me, and most people in attendance.
It was another monster night at Scruffy’s. While I sweated out my dash to Radio Shack for a power plug, everyone waited in anticipation for the best competition of trivia since I started this company. This is what we’re all about: You have fun, I have fun.
Eleven teams packed the joint, but there were four battling it out for three prizes. The Schlepping Hoses pullled a monster score, but were relegated to fourth in the always exciting tie-breaker. Back Dat Ass Up With the Resurrection came in third, with a great trivia shove at the end.
But it all came down to a tie-breaker between defending champion Cookie Monster and returning juggernaught Tube Sock for a one question free-for-all. And without further ado…
have I ever told you about my fear of termites? There’s something about an animal that can eat wood and is small enough to bury itself in my eardrum that creeps me out. I mean, c’mon…can’t we find…
oh crap! The trivia game! The Cookie Monsters were closest on their tie-breaker, making a two week winning streak! We’ll talk more about termites next week. Seriously…that’s a creepy animal

We had twelve teams duking it out last night in our little cozy snug! I got booed by the second question, which is always good to get out of the way in the early part of the game.
But the booing stopped, the teams got serious, and the competition was fierce.
Craptacular took round one, all by himself….wow! Considering how many teams there were, and how many players, that’s pretty incredible.
The Cookie Monsters decided it was time to stop messing around. They won round two in impressive fashion, which propelled them to a victory in the entire game. Ass Patrol had a jaw-dropping round three to take that round, but Cookie Monster was just too much to take.
The winner of my favorite name of the night: I’ll Bring the Vaseline if You Bring the High Fives, followed closely by Punk in Drublic and Dirty Bert and Ernie. Get your rubber ducky and go clean yourselves up!
It was a fantastic showing, and I appreciate everyone being there. We’ll see you next week…but only if you bring the vaseline.

Now this is how trivia should be!
We had a full house tonight to celebrate the final trivia night in the intimate, shotgun bar. We had great teams, great times, and (mostly) great trivia!
If I was able to count, it would have been perfect. But with that said, we got our (my) early errors out of the way and had a competitive night, with twelve teams battling for the booze.
There is a team that will go unmentioned that inferred by their team name that I am not a fan of the females. Bastards! Let’s get this straight…..Tobin loves the females.
With that out of the way, let’s get on to the victors. The Angry Inch found a new watering hole and a fast track to first place. Even with a sub-par third round (that sound you hear is me shaming my pointer finger at you), they took the prize for two of three rounds, and the game. It looks like Moist Crevasse (taking second by one point) has their work cut out for them in the future. Moist Crevasse, I think my new nickname for you is “Team-Cross-Out-the-Right-Answer.”
Long One in the Wrong One took the third round by storm, but an abyssmal second round kept them out of the running. My favorite team name, Reverse Cowgirl, took off before getting a chance at a free pitcher….oh well. Let’s hope that the team name produced some results later.
The Greasy Pintos kept me entertained all night with their anger, sweat, and tears and blown ear-drums. Let’s see you next week!
I had a great time tonight, and I think that it showed why this is my favorite locale. Even though the PBR and Bass was cashed before we started, I love the place, the staff, and most importantly, the teams.
If I have my way, next week we’ll be giving prizes for the top three. If not, I am buying booze for third place. How many people can say that Wednesday night is their favorite night of the week? ME! ME! ME!
Outie-out!
Scruffy’s - I Brought Fireworks! July 5, 2007
Posted by buzzwordz in Scruffy Murphy’s, Tobin Hays.add a comment
Well, to tell you the honest truth, I didn’t techically bring the fireworks, but I tried to do my part by not protesting the fireworks…therefore I feel vindicated.
We had a fun night, and a rather surprising showing for the Fourth of July edition. But some things remain the same: Middle Name: Baldrick took first place yet again, as they had their son running for them so they could conserve their beer calories. Good strategy!
But everyone got a little something for free, I believe. Heck, even I got a free shot! I do believe that shillelaghs will be the death of me. I blame those shots for my stupidity in throwing away the answer sheets to announce the other winners. You’ll just have to trust me that there were several teams, they had a good time, and they did win prizes. DAMN YOU DELECTABLE IRISH COCKTAILS!
In my hangover today, I do remember the names Team Ween and Team Awesome (is there a more awesome team name?), and some dude that knocked out 19 points in the final round all by his lonesome! Somebody knows their Jedi Knights!
Only one more week until the new expansion is open, so join us next week for our final time in the coziness of this shotgun bar. Thanks to everyone for making it out last night.
Scruffy’s - Dynasty No More June 30, 2007

Of course this is how it happens. Last week I asked if Moist Crevasse was ready to create a dynasty, then they promptly get trounced. Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing (AKA Middle Name) took first place, even without all of their teammates. The duo was able to fend off MC, as well as other formidable challenegers Boisy, We Love Porn, Team #1, and PC Load Letter in a great night of booze-swilling action.
I think the multiple shots that I took may have had some sort of effect on me (you think?), but I appreciate them anyway. Scruffy’s new expansion may be open by next week, so drop on by for some booze, trivia, and fireworks for the holiday!
Scruffy’s - The Start of a Dynasty? June 22, 2007

Wel, well, well. With a squeaker of a win with just one point, Moist Crevasse took last night’s trivia once again. These folks seem to be determined to take over the trivia world, even though I had to split them into two. Their trivia siblings, Dusty Gulch, managed a tie for second. So maybe the challenger can come from within. I guess that’s kind of like Charlie Sheen running into Martin Sheen in Hot Shots. By the way, if you do a Google image search for “Hot Shots” at work, make sure the SafeSearch is on.
But breaking the tie for second, Middle Name Booty Shake showed they cannot be intimidated. They even did a little booty shake to celebrate. Oh….the same Google search rules applies to “booty shake” as well.
Bahooka came to their first trivia night and left with nothing but a night of fun, some pretty damn cool t-shirts, and what little was left of their pride. Don’t sweat it, Bahooka, there’s no shame in not being able to differentiate the movie titles between Clint Eastwood and gay porn.

Looks pretty gay to me.

What a fun night tonight. Any time you get booed? bood? booeded? and applauded the same night, you know there is a success story somewhere in there.
We started with a house full of Irish insurance brokers (there’s not a joke there…..seriously, it was full of Irish insurance brokers) to preggers and non-preggers. The preggers lost a heads-up for the final question, but most impressive was that they brought their own answer sheets: high quality paper, team name pre-designed. It has me worried that my shabby-chique answer sheets might be beneath my players.
Moist Crevasse took first with a tie-breaker for all of the cash (or, gift certificates). Middle Name Jazz Hands had me laughing all night. Fokkers were strong early, but tailed late. She’s Not Pregnant didn’t even know they were in the running and pissed away a gift card. Oh well.

Proper Jazz hands….let’s get it straight.
I like Scruffy’s because I get to play my own tunes, the crowd gets to give me living hell all night long, and the drinks are cheap. Applause….I actually got applause. The only other time I have gotten applause was when I agreed to zip up my pants on a particularly disgraceful night that involved a bag of Lincoln Logs and a set of jumper cables. Don’t ask.
A Wild One at the Scruff! May 31, 2007

Well, it was a wild night at Scruffy Murphy’s for trivia!
It was a dogfight (with no intentional reference to Michael Vick) until the end, but Shitty Shitty Bang Bang pulled it out after a tight battle with Moist Crevasse for first place.
The lovely ladies of Bat Country showed the proper way to complain about a question: We’re too young and supple to know this answer. Now that is quality complaining, and was enough to earn them a free pitcher of beer! It’s no crime to not know the Sweathogs.
Tube Sock had an unusually tough night, but I am sure they will be back to fight for their rightful place.
One of our regular teams kept me on my toes by changing their name all night: Middle Name: Danger, Middle Name Squirrel Hunter, Middle Name Debutante Catcher. I think they were just trying to mess with my feeble mind as I doused it with Boddingtons.
It was a great night, lots o’ fun, lots o’ booze. We’ll see if we can reduce the number of questions about boy scout merit badges.
