Jackson’s - Marci’s Training Night May 30, 2008

Hey everyone!  Thursday night was my first night on the mic, and everyone took it pretty easy on me.  Thank you for that!!  I’m not sure if the players were the guinea pigs or I was, but either way, it went well.  I had a little bit of stage fright at the beginning, but quickly got over that.  I did find that with the wireless mic that I couldn’t take one step to the right, because I lost reception.

What an enthusiastic crowd at Jackson’s last night, I hope you guys weren’t just putting on an act for the newbie.  We had 8 teams to start and 7 at the end-  just one snuck out early.  We had the dj spinning mixes and answering trivia at the same time.  Way to go Dangerous Dan and your team, I Always Wear Condoms on Trivia Night.

Osiris, weekly regulars came back this week to play with us.  (I’m believing the regular host, Tobin, that they come every week, maybe I should come back next week to see for myself).  They never seemed quite confident of their answers, but won a pitcher of beer for taking round one.  And ended the game in third place, way to go!

The winner of round two, and also second place overall, Can We Hear Four Songs at One Time, put up a good fight.  Maybe he’s flipping off the camera cause they only heard three songs?  Or maybe it’s cause they wanted more beer?  Hmmm, or maybe it’s because he’s got a girl and he’s making fun of the fifth wheel in the corner?

Little Lebowski’s Urban Achievers came straight from a kickball game.  They must have had a good adrenaline rush, cause they were rowdy and then swept in and won round three and then took the game by two points.  I’m sensing we should change the name to “Little Lebowski’s Over Achievers.”  With half a pitcher still on the table when I delivered the freebie pitcher, I’m hoping they saved the free beer gift certificates for next time (unless they start the weekend early, like I did today).

I’m not sure which was Ted, but nobody on this team seemed dead.  Big Head Ted, Soon to Be Dead was a strong opponent throughout the game.  But wait, what’s the guy in the middle looking at?!

Now this team looks a little uneven with the sexes there.  That must be why Merkins wanted more hockey questions.

The girls from, 3 Way, brought two men with them.  I’m not sure if they just couldn’t decide which one to pick, or what the story was.  Every time I talked to this foursome about their name, they seemed to have a different rational for having that name.

Again, I’d like to thank you guys for being such good sports with me.  And as Tobin said, “If you find yourself gay and on Colfax, visit Marci at Charlie’s on Tuesday!”

It certainly was a great night of trivia at Jackson’s on Thursday.  Despite the late start, it was fast & furious as 10 teams battled for the booze and gift certificates.

We were back after a two-week hiatus, and MAN, were we ready to roll or what?  The day before opening day had the staff looking for an early bedtime, but trivia players would have none of that!

Jenn Rules was able to take round one with a near perfect score.  Flip This made a great run at round two, winning the free pitcher (welcome back, Flip).  But the award for persistence, and the top prize, went to WTF Happened to Our Free Beer?  Now you know WTF happened to your free beer.

Pictures abound, as I am trying to pump out a week’s worth of trivia in one day.  Thank you everyone for greeting me in my triumphant return.  We’ll see you this Thursday!

Are you sure you need that free beer?  WTF Happened to My Free Beer.

Yes, this blog is very late.  We’re on a couple of weeks hiatus for the NCAA tournament, so I suppose I have a little time to post the pics.

The awesomeness of What the **** Is In This Shot? took first place, leaving Merkin to shake their heads in agony.  All of the details are fuzzy to me now, which I am sure they are for you as well, so I’ll just post the pictures and let you photoshop them.

With some surprise guests, and I believe Jackson’s is the Thursday night hangout for Buzzwordz hosts, we made a couple of adjustments to trivia to let the convicts run the prison.  Maybe I should have had all of the hosts take turns on the mic?  No, of course not.  That would rob me of joy I get in crushing their trivia hopes and dreams, which I cherish.

What a great crowd last night!  Our little Trivia at Jackson’s is all grownds up, and its all grownds up, and it’s all grownds up.

Who’s the big winner tonight?
I’m Getting a Serious Vibe Here

Great teams, great trivia, and a few looks of WTF?!?  The benefit of proofreading is that it gives you a chance to change your decision to have a three point Murphy Brown question, but also makes you re-think 1970’s defenseive nicknames, which would be a tragedy.

Twelve teams played, which is one of our biggest non-game-night crowds, and it was a tight game until the very end.  Yard Sale’s team showed in bits and pieces, but by they were just in time, as they won for the night by one point.  They are not simply content with winning Sunday nights, and their fear that I might break up their team clearly had them emotionally distraught.  Don’t fret, I won’t break you up…maybe…hehe.

In the battle of disgusting team names, I Drink Your Milky Pimp Shake was the photo finish winner, and did well in the game taking second place.  How do such nice people think of such disgusting names?  Me thinks they have some dark secrets that are best kept hidden.  Oh, Sabrina, here’s the album you need to get:

That’s pretty much how the three rounds sequenced.  Team Yard Sale came in with a near-perfect round one, and it looked like we were going to set some records.  But then, round 2 came along and had everyone in the house shaking their heads in frustration.  Mama Cass, Mama Cass, Mama Cass.

Oh well.  Like we always say, it’s “a free education with beer!”  Nice showing by our teams last night, including an unscheduled Buzzwordz Host corporate meeting, with almost half of our hosts showing up to have a great time on a Thursday evening!

One-eyed Wonder did a fantastic job of fighting it out until the end, all by himself.  Tim Duncan is a Terrorist disappeared for most of the third round, claiming he had a phone call from an actual woman.  Yeah, right.

One-Eyed Wonder….literally!
One-eyed Wonder - Literally!

Team Useless Knowledge came in late in round 2, but showed their trivia skillz and a runner on almost every question!  Just a tip for you next time: have the cute girl run up the answers…you get more leniency that way! (I know, I’m a cave man).

Pussy-Go-Getters-Minus-One took second place for the evening with their new teammates.  Persistence has its rewards!

Pretty Princes of Parties finally gave me some insight into their team name, but I think I will still call them the Princesses.  I’m a stubborn old man set in my ways, dammit!

Merkins were back, and it’s always great to see them.  They barnstormed in for a victory in rounds two & three!  If you were there just a few minutes earlier, the title woud have been yours!

Great time, and a great crowd!  Jackson’s is always halfway between a very serious trivia competition and a goof-off party.  I love it.  Look forward to seeing you all next week!

What a great night at Jackson’s!  Well, sometimes decent trivia helps.

Kidding aside, it was a really fun night with some regulars, some newbies, and some staff, that apparantly knows a ton of stuff in the third, and doesn’t know squat in the first two.  Maybe they were just setting a trap.

Anywho.

The Jive Turkeys, now featuring Sexual Chocolate did take round 3 and the overall game, which is always a shame when the staff wins….they can’t take home prizes!

Therefore, The Flying Chairs took home round 2 and the prize for the game.  But all by himself, just minding his own business, checking out the UCLA basketball game, Late to the Game capped a stunning round three with a tie-breaker win for the free pitcher.  Even he was shocked!  Team 9.5 was back for their second week, pulling in a very strong showing.  Nice to see you all back!

Normal dominator Allergic to Pencils was sent home weeping in his free beer after a rough finish…at least he liked the set!

A shout out to my peeps, Osiris, who keeps plugging away, every Thursday, like the champs that they are.

See you all this Thursday, folks.

As in, Holy Crap there are a ton of people playing!  Ummmm…..no less than 28 teams tonight.  Some might say they were there for the Cowboys/Packers game tonight, but I would call them a LIAR!

I managed to work around the game with only pissing off one group out of a packed house.  I felt a little badly about angering even a single table, so here were the stages of guilt I felt:

1. “Oh, I’m sorry.”
2. “You’re wearing a Packers jersey.  I am not sorry.”
3. ”Wait, you’re kind of cute.  I am sorry.”
4. “You’re drinking white zinfandel.  I AM NOT SORRY.”

But everyone else had a great time in a competitive game.

Team Rob and DS tied for round one, with Rob taking the tie-breaker.

It then got a little nutty with a four-way tie for the second round.  Pantalones, Goldfish Don’t Bounce (awesome name), 2Hot 4Handle, and Oopsie Poopsie, I Touched My Butthole duked it out for the tie, and Oopsie, Poopsie took the booze.  And apparantly, working at Outback does not make one a steak expert, it makes you a Bloomin’ Onion expert.
Ahhhhhh, health food.

Round three was won by 2Hot 4Handle, but I think they took off without their free beer!  bummer.

The game came down to a tie-breaker between The Larks and Team Rob, which was a close one, but The Larks were just slighlty more Cameron Diazish, taking home the gift certificate, and the admiration of all.  Oh, and the Cowboys won…WOOOHOOO!

We’ll see you all next week!

Since the Coors Light Model Search was going on upstairs with our equipment, it took  some bailing wire in the form of Jen to have trivia night.  She was just there to see if she wanted to be a Buzzwordz host, and tuned out to be a host before she ever thought possible.  I was relegated to the DJ booth while she operated the slides.  While this is not exactly rocket science, she did a great job on making it a smooth night!  It took slightly more cleverness than the ”genius” on the Viagra commercials that it took the year 2007 to discover a VCR.

And then there was the competition!

We had some strong teams out there last night.  Merkins were there in force and took round one with a perfect score, but got knocked from their perch by the Pho King Nutz and UCSP, who tied for first and decided to share their victory.  I would have found that to be a remarkable display f sportsmanship if they hadn’t already been sharing all of their beers the entire night. :/

Team Teammates did a remarkable job in their first trivia night, finishing just out of the running.  We hope to see you guys next week.

The Blue Ballers left me hanging as they gave up on the last few questions.  HEY!  Only AA is for quitters!  And yes, you are correct: if you send up the cute girls with the answer sheet, you do get more concessions.  In fact, I am thinking of just adding a bonus point for it every time.

Thank you everyone for a fun night.

We had microphone problems, we had fireworks….It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

But mostly, it was the best of times!

We had a fantastic turnout tonight!  I hope that everyone got something for free.  It would be a crime for me not to mention the V-Spots, who left me enough dirty messages to make the editor of Penthouse Forum blush.  Whew!  I guess there are benefits to asking trivia questions….three hotties making me blush like a catholic schoolgirl entering a van that says FREE CANDY.

With all of that said, let’s get on to the winners.

We had a battle of the second-placers with Pho King Nuts, the Denver Kickers, and Team Awesome for one single tie-breaker……and Pho King took in in one fell swoop!  Enjoy that pitcher.

But taking it all was the regular powerhouse Merkin, who gave me more insight into their team name than I could possibly imagine (or hope, or want, or deserve).

I had a great time tonight, and I hope that my teams did as well.  I promise: NO MICROPHONE ISSUES THIS NEXT THURSDAY.

At least I provided fireworks.

Well, there were very few teams on Thursday, but we still managed to Trivia like rock stars!

I guess everyone was tired from partying on the 4th, because that is the slowest Thursday I have ever seen at the Jack.  With that said, the Denver Dingleberries pulled in a very strong performance, beating out the Stinkie Pinkies.

I guess everyone had dirty thoughts one their minds that night, but the Blue Ballers always left me wanting more for some reason.

I have a feeling that that attendance was an anomoly and that we’ll have our normal strong showing next week.  Come join us for thrifty Thursday and get your weekend started early!

A rarity in the world of Buzzwordz: an individual tied for first place!  Steve, in all of his motorized wheelchair glory, turned in an amazing performance to get into a tie-breaker battle with regular powerhouse Merkin.  He ultimately lost the tie-breaker, but deserves a major kudos for battling it out until the end.  I don’t know if the BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! was an indicator of his chair backing up or a celebration of his greatness!

Pho King Nutz pulled up within striking distance in the second round, but I think the brightness of their red shirts burned some holes in their brain cells for the third.

I promise, no more Charmed questions next week.  But in the meantime, I’ll show you why I still like the show.

Jackson’s - Night of the drunk baseball fans June 22, 2007

Well, they claimed to be baseball fans, but I have a feeling there were more BEER fans than baseball fans.

We did a night of all-baseball trivia to mark the end of the series with the Yankees (GO ROX!).  Well, let’s just say that people that say they are baseball fans don’t know squat about baseball.

Except for two teams.  Obvious Yankee fans, 27 in ‘07, took first.  A nice job by an all-girl team.  not that girls don’t know anything about baseball…I just don’t see too many of them playing baseball.  However, if your parents grew up in Brooklyn, you should know Flatbush.

Team Rockies Sweep kept it competitive, but fortunately, the real Rockies were able to do better than Rockies supporters.

Thank you all for coming out tonight.  We’ll see you next week with the regular schedule of trivia!

Basketball, baseball……and some trivia June 1, 2007

Tonight was certainly a challenge at Jackson’s.  Trivia started quietly, as the Rockies and the Cavs/Pistons games were in the boring moments.

Then…..BOOM!  We got slammed by peoples of all levels of intoxication after the game, just as the basketball game was heading into its’ double-overtime greatness.  I guess Lebron can play.

But with all of that, we had a really good night of trivia.  Asia (who I am not 100% sure were Asian) won it out by one point over the Pillow Fighters.  Asia was thrown for a moment by a Dawson’s Creek question, but was able to recover nicely to take it down.  Typical powerhouse Merckeljerk was mysteriously off their game.  Maybe they were dazed by the crowd, maybe they are geting over the depression of their kickball loss last week….I dunno.

Most entertaining were the Intoxicated Bears.  They were drunk enough from the game to give me concern that we were going to have our first ejection of the night, but they pulled it together with some quiet moments of compusure to score 15 points in the final round.  Not bad, considering standing was a challenge at that point.

A great night all-around, with the always fantastic staff.   It looks like they may be splintered, though, as the staff had a civil war and split into two teams.  To be continued?……
