The Jets Are Un Touchable… but for how long? July 2, 2008

What a crazy night!  I can tell the weather is getting hot, because it’s sure getting cranked up at Charlie’s!  With lots of drink specials, everyone was required to have a beer to play (ok, not really, but everyone still did- who can pass up 50 cent beers???).  It could be because it’s almost the holiday weekend- but everybody was cutting loose tonight!  There were also some regulars missing, what the heck?!

Ever since I took the reins, the same team has won every game.  But the other teams sure have been putting up a fight.  We used all three tie breakers this week, which is pretty unusual.  I also had men who prefer men hitting on straight women, which is also pretty unusual.  Oh what a night!!

The returning winner and also this weeks winner was The JETS.  They won two rounds, thus two pitchers, but at least they shared a sip :)  Last week I had reported that one of the member might not return.  But to the disappointment of every Charlie’s, the team had two regular members tonight.  With a much awaited hair cut and a burned shirt, they still took the other teams by storm!

The winner of the tie breaker for second place was Alleycat.  Most of the regulars for this team were out of town, they must have decided to start vacation early- but I didn’t approve that!

The third place winners had some new members tonight.  I recruited some of them from a dinner party I was at, and they joined Power Princesses.  This team was a forced to be reckoned with, but just couldn’t hack it in the tie breaker.  There were more members from the team, but due to employment and education reasons, they didn’t want to be included in the picture (eventhough we discussed just putting a black bar across their eyes, they didn’t go for it).

Sluts2 (that’s Sluts Squared) came in fourth place.  They were pretty good contenders until they drank too much in round three and just couldn’t keep up. They did promise to come back next week though.

Hot Stuff really only made it two rounds, then was “preoccupied” the final round.

We also had Team Giggy and Blue Eyes which only played round one then dropped off the face of the earth.  If you guys play longer next time, you have more odds at winning!

What a Night For New Friends!! June 25, 2008

Wow!  What a weird night that it was!  Let me give you a preface to the night, I went to a dinner for work, which was sponsored by a pharmaceutical company.  I went with a couple of coworkers and I snuck out early to make it to Charlie’s  on time.  One of the coworkers from dinner followed suit and came to join trivia night for her first time.  Funny thing though,  a couple of the guys that I didn’t even know from the dinner, they ended up at Charlie’s  too!  So here we are, a couple of gluttons, full from dinner, ready to do some trivia.  Then of course, we have the regular die-hards, that will be there no matter what.  Then there was a local dj that I think I was the only one that recognized.  And an up-and-coming artist who wasn’t sure about the place, cause he kept telling me how he was straight.  Really though, we were all one big happy family.

We had a few teams tonight that were new to trivia night.  They weren’t new to the bar per say, but just new to playing live trivia at this particular location.  But being new didn’t really put them at a disadvantage.  A couple of the teams did cut out early though, it must have been past their bed-times.

Let’s talk about the winners again, then we’ll move on down the line.  JETS won yet again this week.  They had two members tonight, but fended off six members from the next team.  One of the members of JETS admitted to me that he’s a member of a prestigious academic community (maybe that’s why they kick ass so much, or he was just trying to convince me that he’s smart but really he’s just cheating).  Ok, I’m kidding.  I know that you know your shit.  Their team might be a bit shorter from now on, if one of them decides to move back to California.  But really, I don’t think he’ll find much more fun than Charlie’s, so I’m betting that he’ll stay!

In second place, and ten points behind first place was Alleycat.  They clarified their name and informed me that it’s singular, not plural, as I had previously reported.  They “are one” that prowl the alley’s together.  Hmm, I’m really not going to ask, I just won’t!  So they’ll be back next week, to spend their giftcards that they won tonight.  In the meantime though, I can bet a couple of them will be at home watching reruns of Heros, as they are avid fans of the show.

Our third place winner was a brand new team.  They were new to trivia night, but really kicked ass.  This group was a bunch of girls called Lez Go.  They really didn’t like the idea of having to walk their answers up, but did a great job when they did.  Two of my co-workers from my other job joined this team (they better have been the ones that answered the psychological questions).

There were a couple other teams that played a few rounds and left.  Had you stayed, you may have taken one of the prizes.  Damn it, stay next time!!  Fabulous did fabulous!  Actually, they were tied for 4th place, but then had to run.  Those were the guys that I had dinner with that randomly ended up at the same destination.  Barbie Bears, oh how I loved your name!  (it was inspired by my Barbie shirt that I was wearing).  You guys did great, even though you were mad that my “cousin” isn’t doing trivia anymore.  So the name, Beavers, was random in that the members were men. Hmm, yeah.  So you should have stayed and finished out the game, but I know how to find you both!  Beer ‘n’ Buzzin, what the heck?!  You come and rip off your shirt for cheaper drinks, but then you bail after just a few questions.  Maybe you got accosted by an interested man, if that was the case, I’m sorry for dissin’.  Becki (with an I), you won my free shot contest and then only answered a few questions, that must have been ADD, cause it wasn’t boring tonight!

We started with a few teams, had others join, had others leave, but of course, it was still a showdown of JETS and Alleycat.  The tournament will continue next week!

JETS (still yet to get a hair cut)

Alleycat  Justin, why are your eyes always closed in every picture??

Lez Go I just couldn’t get them closer to get another picture, so we took three

 Barbie Bears

Fabulous still dressed up from dinner!

Beer ‘n’ Buzzin

Beavers (I still don’t get the name, guys)

See you next week, Charlies Tuesday at 8:30pm (maybe a lil earlier if I’m ready to go- or later if I arrive late from a fancy dinner again).

In the meantime, we have a couple websites  www.myspace.com/MarciBuzzwordz   and www.myspace.com/Buzzwordz

And the JETS Score Takes Flight June 17, 2008

It’s only a couple of weeks into my gig at Charlie’s, but I love you guys!  I mean, seriously, there are some really good trivia players here that are serious about the game, but you throw back a pitcher, or two, or five, while you play.  Trivia definitely wouldn’t be that fun if everyone were completely sober.  Without beer, it might feel like we were at school or something.  And the deals!  Really, who can pass up fifty cent beers?!

Tonight was an exciting, but humid night on the patio at Charlie’s.  With the ongoing rift between two regular teams, Alleycats and JETS, they were confronted by a couple of new teams.  I keep pitting the teams against each other, but really, you guys seem to get along.  I would suggest you join forces, but then it just wouldn’t be as fun.  I did have a suggestion last week that the teams disban and every member goes solo, to see who really is the smartest.  Now I’m not going to enforce that one, because that just sounds too painful for everyone involved.  But…. if you were solo, you’d get your own pitcher of beer.  (something to think about there!)

Once again, JETS, won every round, and the took the game.  They scored 42 points, tying their high score from last time.  They had only two players tonight, and we were trying to get a makeover for one of them.  Gotta love the playfulness of a not-so-vain gay man!

Even with the extra help from some out of towers from Wisconsin, Alleycats, just eked by and landed the number two spot.  They thought that adding a straight man would give them an advantage for the sports questions, but they just didn’t have the groove tonight.  I do believe the promised me a drink for next week though!  I also would like to challenge them to land the JETS.

The third place winner was a team that just snuck in and racked up the points.  Even though they guessed that “Bill Cosby” was an African American Supreme Court Justice (funny thing, look down at their picture and tell me they shouldn’t have gotten that one right).  The Hot Boyz landed the third place score.  One of these guys played last week, but wasn’t very serious about it, but they kicked ass this weekend.

Just one point behind third place, I wanted to mention the Ninja Space Pirates.  These guys also just took the game by storm and surprised us all.  They also happened to both be wearing red shirts.  And even more of a coincidence, they were wearing red shirts and sitting on a red bench!

Notably, we also had a couple more teams, some regulars, some new.  Us, Steelers, The Pink Ladies, The Hookers, Babbling One Cell Amoeba, and Buzz ‘n’ Beer also threw in some answers.  These teams weren’t in the top scorings, but they also didn’t play every question.  Come back next week guys, and stay a little longer!

A hot, but slow night at Charlie’s June 10, 2008

Tonight was a slow night for extra participants, and the bar in general.  I thought maybe the Capitol Hill folks without AC went to work instead of the bar for the AC?  But one of the players told me, “Fags don’t work.”  So maybe that weren’t working.  Where ever crowd had gone to, they missed a good trivia competition.

It was a night of tough competition between two regular teams that are very strong.   JT won last week (the Jets minus a few players) and I challenged the Alley Cats to make a comeback.  We had a couple new teams this week, but nobody was really able to keep up with the regulars.

With the Jets back at full power, and a couple extra Charlie’s members, they swept the game.  They won the game and broke their previous high score, with 42 points.  They were the winners for all three rounds, therefore got the game.  While they didn’t know about canned cheese or horse races, they do know about the Lilith Fair and Stand By Me.  (We had to take two pics, cause after a few pitchers of beer, everyone gets a lil silly and thirsty!)

Jose and Phil snuck in and took second place.  Jose pictured on right in white hat, Phil has left the building, but been replaced.  This team put up a tough fight in round one and was able to score in and win the tie breaker by default.

While one of their friends offered me a sexual favor to bump up their score, the Alley Cats came in with third place.  There were some excuses about distractions and abandonment.  I think you’re just all thrown off by my beauty. LOL.  yes, yes, I know we’re at a gay bar!

One of the members of Babbling Silence usually plays with the Alley Cats, but broke off tonite.  (you’re right, there’s only one person in the above picture.)  Babbling Silence started out with two players, but one of them made an exit after round one.  Then before the end of round three, the remaining player to the team disappeared too.  So they ended up losing the tie breaker.  Man oh man, ya gotsta stick around till I ring the bell.

Unique sat out round one, but thought the questions were pretty easy.   They played for part of round two, but then bailed out.  I’m guessing it’s cause one of them was preggers and maybe had to use the bathroom too much, that or she didn’t have alcohol, cause we all know that alcohol helps you to know the answers.

While we didn’t really answer any questions, the triva staffers sure had fun!  Marci the “TJ” and John the DJ

If the heat was to blame for the lack of Charlie’s goers, it’s just going to get hotter, so get your butts in and get a cold beer.  2 for $1, who can beat that?!  Seriously, $4 per gallon.  Skip the gas and get beer instead!

So tonight was my first running trivia alone!  I promised the blog to be up by tomorrow, but was still pretty pumped up from a night of excitement.  I mean, if I didn’t need to work my day job, I would just live at Charlie’s!  But instead, I’ll just have to sustain on instant replays until next week.  Charlie’s had a lot of different things happening tonight.  They were having a benefit when I got there, but it was pretty much dissipated by the time trivia started.  Charlie’s was also celebrating it’s 28th Anniversary, with 28 cent drink specials (and boy was there a line!).  And if I could ask for anything more, they were working on putting a dj on the patio where we do trivia.  All the while, I was trying to convince the crowd that I could replaced Tory with a smooth transition.  With all of that said, we did get some trivia questions answered.

I feel that tonight was wonderful and the crowd was so accepting.  (Except that you didn’t tell me when my mascara was smeared!)  I received such a warm welcome, I could not have asked for more.  I was right when I told them at Jackson’s last week that you guys would be nicer than all those crabby straight boys!

We had some different players and new teams tonight, way to be brave!  I mean really, we’re not going to make fun of you if you miss a sports question.  Maybe we would make fun of you if you got a sports question right at Charlie’s (ok, not really).

JT

While one of the guys from this team plays all the time, he was missing two of his team members.  Since their name relates to their initials, he had to change the name to JT.  He kept recruiting friends who would come and go, but he fought his way and won rounds two and three and then stole the game by one point.  Just wait till the E and S are here next week!

Alley Cat

AlleyCats was a strong contender for the game.  They won round one, but just barely gave up round two and three.  They came in second place, just one point behind the first place winner.  AlleyCats promise that they’ll be back next week for a rematch.

\

Our third place winner was new to the game tonight.  They took some convincing to stay in the game, but I’m sure the prize will keep them at the bar a little longer tonight, if not back next week.  Thank you, “O.”  I never did figure out what the name really meant, or maybe I just don’t want to know.  See you next week!!

AA

If one team deserves to be mentioned, that would be AA. These guys are Charlie’s staff, maybe they named themselves that because they think they need a 12 step program?   I bet you’re wondering why they have a mic and a laptop, no, I wasn’t making them do my job so I could party.  They were working on music for us.  We had some technical difficulties, but I’m hoping to have Charlie’s patio THE PLACE TO BE ON TUESDAY NIGHT.

We had some other teams that I at least owe an honorable mention.  Beer ‘n’ Buzz’n, Tea Bag, and Aces, thanks for your participation, no matter how brief it was.

Again, I want to thank you guys for such a wonderful night and warm welcome.  See you next week!  In the meantime, if you want to be my internet friend, you can find me at http://www.myspace.com/MarciBuzzwordz

What perfect weather!  Hoppin patio with loads of teams playing.

I really gotta hand it to the JETS, who stood up to stiff competition and won a solid 1st place prize for a whole month now.

Round winners Heros softly disappeared in the evening like a wisp of smoke from your friendly Charlies Bar patio.

Alleycat proved themselves Prowlicious, with consistent answers the whole night.  They are worthy second place victors.

The eagerly anticipated return of the King Prawns livened the night, in the atmoshpere of reduced second hand smoke ratio.  Yay summer!  A solid performance grabbed a third place bar tab.  They also claimed a Tiebreaker pitcher about Hallmark cards revenue.  Come party again next week!

The Beaverton Munchers, Serena, Your Hot (yes, spelled like that) and Diabolical Darrell also played it out and had a great time!

Tonight was a perfect example of how Charlie’s is a go-to weekly bar for entertainment no matter what.  Buzzwordz was the core out on the patio, turning an otherwise calm night into a drunk random Colfax fest.

Taking the crown for several straight weeks, the JETS proved once again to be the trivia kings (or queens?).

Coming back strong this week, Alleycat pulled a Tiebreaker pitcher (about OPEC oil production), and nabbed Second Place- nice work folks!

Newcomers Studmuffin raked in 3rd Place bar tab, while nursing “Random Drunk Lady” most of the Third Round.  Thanks for keeping her contained!

The Retard Junction won hands down best team name.  See you soon!

Warm springs and fun times at the unpredictable smoky Charlie’s Patio.

Cheers folks!   Tory

Fun time tonight at Charlies- mild weather with a few showers to freshen the air.  The JETS had a great performance tonight, sweeping rounds and taking the first place bar tab.  Way to go folks!

Good showing by Alleycat, grabbing the third prize bar tab and winning the final tiebreaker to earn a free pitcher.  The atomic number of Lawrencium is 103.  Go Team!  Always good times!

Great Second and Third rounds nabbed The Possible Side Effects a 2nd Place bar tab.  We’re all so proud of you!

Also making appearances, the Canadian Wendsturr, the Cockboys, Shouts with a Fist, Team Chrome and the Fireballs packed the patio for a good time all around.  May in Charlies is turning out great.  Cheers til next week!

Awesome time at Tuesday Trivia!  Such nice weather and a huge crowd.

With a full seven teams playing it through, competition was tough.  Three different winners of round pitchers, and a fourth non-round winning team placing too!  Lots of Tiebreakers is always suspenseful.

Although defeated in the second round Tiebreaker, the Royals had great scores every round and won the 1st place prize.  Amazing persistence- great having you!

Congrats to Round 2 Winners Alleycat!  Eeking out a closer guess to the average January Cairo temperature (a measly 64 degrees), these guys got really drunk for no money and learned a few things!  Sounds like  good deal to me.  Always great times guys!

Lisu took the first round, and squeezed into the 3rd place victory slot.  Props folks!

Solid as always, the JETS vaulted into 2nd place with a super third round score.  Way to go team!  The Mishaps, Something Different and Team Blah Blah all also got really drunk for the cost of a load of laundry…

I’m looking forward to a great month of weather, trivia, good company and insanely cheap beer at Charlies on Tuesday nights!

Cheers, Tory

Great night Tuesday at trivia.  Although less mild than last week, the patio was still buzzing with patrons- good time all around.

The applause pauses- the drinks slowly slink- and the tension of a final game Tiebreaker, for 1st place, absorbs the air.  The JTS, the fighting duo-(ish) giving up their ‘E’, lose their crown to Alleycat, all over the year that the Department of Energy was founded.  Well, it took an oil crisis to push that forward, and summer of ‘77 Gerald Ford finally approved creation of the U.S.D.E.

Congrats to Alleycat for snagging the best bar tab, although it was clear that their extensive, earlier libations postponed the use of said bar tab.

Giving a run for these teams, the Lucky Bastards kept the game competitve and won 3rd Place.  Nice job guys, as well as Team Q and the Dumb Guys.

This next month is gonna be awesome with better weather!

Cheers for now.

What great weather on Tuesday- party out on the patio!  Reduced second hand smoke and all, lots of short sleeves…

Probably the most competitive night I’ve seen yet- over 25 players and dozens of onlookers- lots of intelligent discussion which is always more worthwhile!

Props to the newcomers Diamond, who eked out second place with a solid performance all night.  Prowling closely behind, Alleycat will not settle for 3rd again…

The consecutive champions, the JETS, better watch their propulsion apparatus because other teams are looking to hijack it.  I got your backs- good work on 1st place again!

The honorary Tiebreaker went to the latecomers Pitkin, nailing the Happy Trails debut year to snag the free pitcher.  Shouts out to Hillary’s Big White Caucus, Sister Sludge and Darrell’s Tea, all with strong performances amid the mild evening breeze.

Open air party patio that can’t be beaten!  Cheers until next time

Fun night Tuesday on the greatest patio in Denver!  With warmer weather, more people can enjoy the patio without the claustrophobic, nicotine-clambaked hotbox that the winter brought.

Lots of competition tonight pushed the powerhouse Alleycat into second place.  But is two against five really fair?  The newly molded behemoth past the former JT, the JETS (Everybody and Scott too!), took the 1st prize, coming back strong in the late 3rd Round and sweeping for the first time during my presence at Charlies.  Props!

Great showing by the Possible Side Effects, grabbing the 3rd place bar tab.  Also, Shouts out to Bump ‘n Grind, Jose and To Wong Who?, all of whom vow to avenge their loss to the JETS as, of course, the Sharks…

Hasta luego amigos de Charlies!

For once, we all collectively felt the coming of Spring on the best patio around!

Back from a week hiatus, I saw a great showing tonight with the nice weather and “Fitty-cent” High Lifes.  Yeah, the inebriation doesn’t help with the scores but sure makes it more entertaining!

The return of JT to First Place with really strong 3rd round performance.  Their late recruting strategy is definitely working.  The Magic Gathering, Dungeoning Dragonning, Cub Scouting and Sousaphoning really paid off.  I always knew that nerds ultimately rule the world!!

Strong game for Alleycat, getting 2nd place overall and winning round drinks.  Oops, did I say you won even more free drinks than 2nd round beer already imbibed and the bar tab prize too?  What a cruel April Fools I play…

Jeremiah kicked major booty Round 3 and won Third Place, also employing the drunk recruiting strategy.  Nice work!

Props to the stud Mikhail, RonDan, and Honorable Mentions to the Bitches and also the Lesbos, who I think she have a mudwrestling fight to find out who the real winner, that is, the drunkest team, is…

But we all win at Charlie’s Trivia every Tuesday night!

We had a barn-burner at Charlie’s last evening with the Alleycats squeaking out an ever so close victory. If you would have told me at the end of Round 1 how the game would unfold I would have not of believed it. Vagtastic Voyage came out of the gates en fuego, and to the hosts perception, unstoppable. It might have been the battle of attrition or the .50 draws of High Life (yes you read that right) but the train de-railed in the third round and the once insurmountable lead was squandered. Picking up 2nd and gaining momentum all the time was Team JT.  Remember 1st round doesn’t mean jack! The Alleycats proved like Aesop’s tortoise that slow and steady win the race. Ron and Dan just missed the medal round, and although they didn’t finish the game, you got to love team names Biker Boyz and Harvey Milk Maids!

ON a more trivial note, the return of the fully formidable Alleycat claimed victory after a short hiatus.  Nice job guys!

JT earned round drinks and the second place bar tab- rumors of reinforcements arriving next week should keep Alleycat on the prowl for more useless information…

Also great job to MWalsh picking up 3rd prize with a strong round.

Great Trivia tonight- can’t beat the Charlie’s Patio on a mild night!

Full house with a dozen teams coming and going throughout.

Props to the Dondi’s Inferno, Team AJ and Alleycat for a 3 way tie coming down to a Final Tiebreaker!  Based on previous questions about foreign born basketball MVPS and SNL’s Female Power Trio, what is the height difference, in cm, between Hakeem Olajuwon and Cheri Oteri?

Nailing the answer (60), Dondi’s Inferno pulls off the bar tab!  However, they still came short of consistent powerhouse JT in second.  Good work folks!

For the second consecutive week, the teacher’s bloc of Sturrs and Dolls managed a solid first place victory!  A+ for the educators!

Great night with several teams competing for free bar tabs on the best patio around.

The 4-H Club took the biggest prize, representing some of Denver’s finest professionals.  They barely swept the rounds, inebriating themselves to perform even better, as alcohol always does ..

With an awesome 3rd round, Alleycat almost pulled off second, slightly thwarted by JT, with consistent performance in all rounds.

The Dead Guy came within a grave’s chance, and the Longhorns had a surprisingly strong 3rd round earning a best improved team drink.

With trivia from Canada to Elton John, and Magic Johnson to LeBron <James>, you can never go wrong with cheap drinks and good times on Tuesdays at Charlies.

My first Record Breaker at Charlies during my career-

The deadly team JT has recruited and fortified its first place winning streak to 3.  With an unassisted victory, they shattered their previous record of 35 with 40, countem bucko, points (out of 55).  Congratulations guys!  I challenge others to beat these guys down, with weapons or stealth or whatever necessary.

Props to Alleycat, who nailed the Walter Kronkite CBS anchor start year (1962) to win extra drinks during Round 3.  They managed a 2nd place finish and plenty of free drinks!

The Dirrtys paired with the remaining member of Shipwreck to pull 3rd place.  Also a strong debut by the Girls.  Nice job folks!

Yes, Poland and Lithuania were united for over 2 centuries, and “flies” (coffee beans) sound gross to me too with Sambuca.

Fun night tonight, with the whole bar staff partying for the belated holiday party.  Lots of cheap drinks and good times.

JT came back with a strong third round to pull off 1st place for the second week straight.  Great job guys!  They also guessed the closest Tiebreaker Smurf count within 2!  (There are 105)

Round winners and overall second, Alleycat came in with another solid performance.

The effervescent Bar Staff contingent, with a heavily-drunken inspired inappropriate name, came in a distant 3rd.  But they were sure a lot of fun!

Fun night at Charlies tonight, with a big turnout despite the closed patio bar… (it’ll be back tomorrow).  Lots of islands and European trivia, and JT came in for a long-awaited 1st place victory (by a big margin)!  Some people expect so much from themselves…

Another strong night for Alleycat- they beat JT for the 2nd Round free drinks by guessing a few closer Parisians to the actual population (2,153,600 city limits 2005).  They ultimately came out 2nd overall for the night.  Nice work guys!

Team Sugarpants, the perennial 3rd place team, vows to challenge these top guys next week.

Great times, cheap drinks and free knowledge every Tuesday Trivia at Charlies.
