It’s not a twitch… I swear! July 3, 2009

We had a great turn out last night at Old Chicago’s even with the looming holiday weekend. In true summer fashion, I got eaten alive by mosquitoes all night despite the fact we were inside!
Round 1 started slow with only 4 teams, but by the end of the round we had recruited 3 more to make 7! Dirty Llamas took the win easily by nailing the Grab Bag question in it’s entirety.
Round 2 was a bit closer, especially with the addition of a few more teams. Even though Stoners weren’t even close in the first round, they shot past everyone and once they had the lead they never looked back. They also won our bonus beer question!
It all came down to Round 3 and what a round it was! The winner of the round was Your Mom but in a rare happening, Ouch, Ouch, You’re On My Hair won the game overall! That’s right, they stayed in the shadows all night, not winning one round, but came through in the end in totals! Great Job! My old teammates, Norwegian Refugee Redux, came in second which is great considering their best member is now the host and it was their first time back in about 2 months!
Thanks for coming out everyone! Come see me next week, same bat time, same bat place!

Ouch Ouch... I guess the pain was worth it!

Stoners- They like stones?

Internet Dragon Slayers- back for new victims

Norwegian Refugee Redux- Back with a vengence

Your Mom won round 3... I didn't even know she was there!

Da Hosers worked it hard all night!
City Pub Back to It’s Best July 2, 2009

It was a great reversal from the previous week in terms of attendance last night at City Pub. We had plenty of new faces mixed in with the regulars combining for a super competitive game of trivia. We had a total of nine teams matching wits last night with each other for beers, shots, tabs at the bar, and most of all bragging rights for the smartest crew on Hampden.
Michael Jackson Just Beat It, a team made of physicians took Round 1 quite handedly. We had a tie-breaker for Round 2 with Sotally Tober barely beating the Reacharounds for a pitcher of beer on yours truly. Alas, when all the chips were in it was the ST’s that got hot just when they needed to, in Round 3. The point totals broke down like this:
1. Sotally Tober
2.Michael Jackson Just Beat it
3.Sparklemotion
4.Just Us
5.Reacharounds
6. Rejects
7.Jayhawks
8. Three Amigos
9. JV Smooth
Tough Trivia But Lots o’ Style June 28, 2009

It was a good, fun crowd tonight, even though most thought the trivia was a bit tougher than usual.
Half way through round 1, first and last place teams were separated only by 1-1/2 points. But the last few questions allowed Too Drunk to Trivia to pull ahead for the win. The other teams clustered behind them were: Castration Station, Cheesy Bama Rockets, Latoya is Still Here, Alzheimers Unit, Dos Lobos and Ben E Factor.
Wankers new they were going to have to jet but they played a few questions just for the fun of it. Will I see you next week?
Castration Station filled to overflowing so they formed the offshoot: Solo Mojo, and J n R (later J n R n C) showed up for round 2.
It was a showdown between Ben E Factor, Latoya is Still Here and Too Drunk to Trivia – with Latoya pulling off the win by 1/2 point. Ooh that was close.
Solo Mojo was just warming up their style point chops, and were in full swing by round 3 scoring 16 style points (8 ‘real’ points). That might have been a record. They said they’d be back next week and try for a perfect style point round (25 style points). I’m lookin’ forward to it!
Cheesy Bama Rockets and Dos Lobos left but we were joined by Perfection.
Latoya had a stellar 3rd round and no one could catch ‘em but it was a dogfight for second… in an attempt to score 2nd highest point total for the night. Castration Station, Too Drunk, Alzhemier’s Unit, Ben E Factor and J n R n C were all within 2 points of each other behind Latoya.
So Latoya had top points but who was 2nd?
Too Drunk grabbed 2nd. with Castration Station and Ben E Factor just off the mark. Better luck next week.
I hope everyone is learning: show up for ALL 3 rounds, and bring out a full posse of 6 – it’ll make you serious contenders… so I hope to see a bunch of full tables next week starting at 9p sharp!
Ciao for now,
- Keith

Round three came down to a tie-breaker, with Joke Monkey taking the round over the Avengers.
First Place – Joke Monkey (40)
Second Place – Avengers (39)
Most Awesome Team Name of The Night – Tarantula Downpour

Lessons from Benders-June 25th…a sad day June 26, 2009

I want to begin this blog on a somber note. In this day and age of instant information gratification, I am sure you already know that Michael Jackson passed away yesterday afternoon. I am also guessing by now that you might be sick of the media attention on him. But I have to share my two cents.
Michael Jackson was an icon that this generation of pop cultural will not soon forget. Say what you will about his personal life in the last decade or so, you can’t deny the impact he has made on the world. I couldn’t help but think as every question appeared last night how Michael Jackson affected it, either directly or indirectly. For example, there was a question about Panic at the Disco. They have been praised by critics and fans alike for their amazing music videos. But before Michael Jackson, music videos were pretty much just a recording of a band playing their instruments. Jackson was one of the first to make a music video as we see them now, and helped put MTV on the map. Then he completely redifined the idea of a “music video” with Thriller making, in essence, a short film.
I realize people have not been proud of Mr. Jackson in the last few years. The scandals and controversy have far out weighed his cultural significance in recent years. My fear coming into last nights trivia was that no one would respect his life; and wouls just crack a bunch of jokes. Surprisingly no one did. I played three different MJ songs, and each time, the crowd got quiet, and just listened. The only time someone said anything negative was when I played a Fall Out Boy cover of “Beat It.” And that was only because they wanted to hear the real thing.
You will be missed Michael.
In all honesty, I feel that in light of Michael’s death, an in depth recap of tonight’s trivia seems wanting for some reason. So here is a quick summary.
Round 1: 5 teams played. Winners were Floozies of Power after a tie breaker with Cake or Death.
Round 2: Still 5 teams. Winner was Sexy Johnny, but he declined the prize, so The Gary Schapiros got the gift certificate.
Round 3: Three new teams joined, up to 8. Winners were Cake or Death with Multiple Scoregasm coming in second after a tiebreaker.
I will be getting pictures up soon. My camera wasn’t working, so I am drawing the teams. Be up soon.
What did we learn this week?
1) The world is missing a great soul today. At least that’s how I feel.
